Unsuccessfully trying to change the background image in my profile. Somehow can't get rid of the flames despite uploading a different image. Anyone have any ideas?

You're trying to upload it from your computer, I take it? Try uploading the image you want to use to imgur and then use that link to change the backround, I can only ever get it to work that way.
