Yes you picked him to be your teacher. The thing he gave you was the school backpack. Nothing really happened when you pressed B since everyone who gets a teacher gets a backpack and that teacher you saw is now your teacher.

I didn't know Ms. Flower gave my tama a hat with a FACE on it. I didn't realize anything was on it. The nanny gives u a backpack, I thought. But it's really hard to tell what all these things are. XD.
