( Sorry if there has already been a topic on this - i havn't seen one)

When the first generation of Tamagotchi came out in 1997, these cute little electronic eggs were designed to be Pets for children who's parents won't let them have a pet, or for those who don't have the time/space for a real pet. But once the sales went up, it became clear that these little eggs were very popular along both children and adults alike - the new generation of toys had been born.

Since then, (this is based on Tamagotchi in England) 4 major Tamagotchi have been released - version 1, 2, 3 and most recently, version 4 (Jensei). But are these Tamas still pets? These version 4 Jensei tamagotchi are now more human than they are animal-like. They can get jobs, go to school, go shopping, call their grandparents/parents and even visit the matchmaker!

What do you think? Pets or humans?

( Please do not write back with hateful comments saying i'm stupid and Tamagotchi are perfect - i just thought it would be an interesting topic )

They are definitely pets still and I will tell you why:

Tamagotchi were always pets and since the Version 1 they have been able to get a visit from the MatchMaker and have babies so I'll argue with you there but they will always stay the #1 selling virtual PET.

They may be able to go to school and get a job and whatnot, but look at the characters. Most of them look like creature pets. And they hatch from eggs when you first get one. Humans do not. And they have games to play but those are the only ones. There are a limit to the amount of games available to play. I know there isn't a limit of games for me. And I haven't said the most important one that makes a Tamagotchi a pet is the way they evolve. When you are a baby you don't just suddenly make a noise and change shape. And you definitely don't stay a toddler for a day and then suddenly change shape to become a teenager. And you do not become one year older every day.

And I could go on and say there is always food available and you never have to buy food because you'll never run out but it's just the little things that make a Tamagotchi still very much like a cyber pet. And every version will get more realistic, but it will always be 100% Tamagotchi.

Some of the newer characters do look and act too human. But, then again, Tamagotchis are intelligent creatures from another planet, so it's not likely that creatures capable of building cities and space ships wouldn't also have Fishing Rods, CD players, Televisions, Boom Boxes, weapons of mass destruction ... hmmm ... I think I'd better be running along now before they decide to put humans into little plastic cases and keep us as pets.

I'm not sure if that's what hallie meant, GotchiGirl...

I think that Tamagotchi's are still pets, but they are begining to act like humans. It's hard to explain, and I'll edit this post as it comes to me. o.o;;

LOL.

I think Tamagotchis will always be pets. They are very intelligent little creatures, but that's good, their intelligence makes them be able to enjoy things we like, such as: watching movies, getting new things, eating special foods, celebrating holidays, etc. I think that alone makes them more realistic.

Also, a Tamagotchi can't survive on earth without a caretaker. Tamas aren't very independent during their time you care for them. If you forget to feed them, or you don't keep them happy, they get sick and have to leave. The only thing a Tama can do by it's self is brush it's teeth and take a bath (and turn out the lights  ).

I think as long as BanDai makes sure that Tamagotchis depend on us, they will stay "pets".

I think that tamagotchi are getting more and more... intellingent as they go. I mean, compare an Entama to a P1!! Even thought tamagotchi have all those things, UFOs, Stereos, Rollar Skates, Clothes, and Musical Instruments, they are still pets in a way. They need you to play with them so they can have all of those things. You need to feed them and clean them and just plain ♥LOVE♥ them. But at the same time, tamagotchi are more than just pets. To me, they are like friends, only better. Tamagotchi don't yell at you. :) So pets or humans?

You decide.

You can say their Creatures with HUMAN LIKE abilities somewhat like Binary stated.. But ever noticed some tamagotchi's are immature.. Would you see a regular Adult going to schoool and drawing at age 3? But it's messed up how Ban-Dai programmed them to have babies, when you get a baby without mating it comes from a egg, but when you mate with another tamagotchi it comes out the female.... But remember you can take PETS to school, like a Discipline school for Dogs.

In my opnion it's just a multi-game, the mail, school, and job feature seemed like a human world. I think Ban-Dai is encouraging some kids to go to work, and learn some stuff that happens in real life.

Quite weird how they burn pounds so fasr, and humans can't eat a infinite amount of snacks that fast and eat food in 3 bites  , and get a tooth ache cured in about a second. Some people like Bill, Makiko, and etc. can get you though... Also what Adult walks and fall flat on their face at very common times :) , they seem like 1 year babies.

Some people had enough when Ban-Dai programmed the SLOT game on the v2... I loved that game, but they think it will probably want their kids to gamble in the future...

That's all I can say now.

They are very pet like, because you feed them and etc. BUT, the Tamagotchi versions have very human like features, such as your tamagotchi going to work, school, pre-school, a shop, Travel Center, and especially being able to go to TamaTown (like a normal person going downtown.)

On the V4, there are very human looking tamagotchis, such as the secret character 'Bill.' They definitely not humans, because they are weird un-humanly shapes. If you consider them an intelligent life form somewhere out in the galaxy, just go ahead and call them 'Aliens.'

When you connect with all versions, they might do a food eating game. Now, it is very impossible for humans to eat food in about 3 bites, unless you have a very large mouth. I don't know anyone who has a large mouth, big enough to eat a Burger King whopper in about 3 bites, but it is very possible for humans to eat small food particles, such as French Fries, grapes, etc. in 3 or less bites.

As Locky said, BanDai probably put the slot machine game in the V2 for their kids to grow up and gamble, but that is no good point. It takes a million tries to get a penny, and a billion tries to get one dollar. You may be lucky, though to get a penny or a dollar or more in less than the amount that I have posted.

OVERALL: Tamagotchis are pets, not humans.

I have a few opinions over this certain idea:

The Version 4 Tamagotchi does have many new features available, including school, and jobs, and better ways to connect, like friends.

School, jobs, and friends are involved in the lives of humans, too. But that does not mean that Tamagotchi Version 4 is more like humans! The characters do act like humans, they jump, cry, become ill, etc., but they still are "pets", because humans like you and me take care of them, just like the way humans take care of real pets, such as dogs, fish, cats, or parakeets; humans feed their pets, groom or wash them, play with them, cuddle them, etc.

The care they give to real, live pets is similiar to the care they give to tamagotchis. That means that tamagotchis, including the V4, are closer to being 'pets' than 'humans'.

I conclude that tamagotchi versions are closer to pets than humans.

I hope you can understand this reply I contributed to this topic.

They're a little of both. You see,Tamagotchis are still considered pets because of course you feed it,give it attention, and cure it when it has an illness.

But now,I think you're right. The version 4 allowing tamas to have jobs is human like, and going to school.I can tell the more versions of tamagotchis these people invent, the more human like it'll get.

You can admit, over the months you will get tired of you tama until a new version comes out, right?Well,I figured that just feeding your pet, praising it,ect can get VERY boring,so bandai just wants to spice things up and make something that will catch everyone's attention. And that's what they're doing;making things more "imaginary" and "human like"

You never know what they're going to come up with next.

I would have to say they're pets.

Like pets, you can train them and 'design' there future from the start.

I can see where they could be portrayed as human like, but tamas still tend to lean more twoard pets.

Of course tamagotchis are and always will be pets sure the fact that they can go to school and get a job is a little human like but that just makes them more interesting if bandai changed tamagotchis to be any thing than what they are they wouldnt be tamagotchis I mean sure they could be more pet like but if they really made them pet like they wouldnt be as fun so could you really imagine a cat playing bump

I think they would be pets, but are sort of like humans. I mean, why would a human be from another planet?

It's true that they v4s do go to school, get a job, ect. They do some human things but are not human.

I'll post/edit more maybe another time.

I personally think that tamagotchi will always be 100% pets. They are pets with human characteristics, Bandai probably made it so that they can have jobs so it would more interesting, and fun to watch your tama grow older, and grow up and have a baby of it's own

I say they made it this way, so it seems like you have a child, and not a pet. It makes your resonsibilities greater, which you can benifit from in real life.

I agree. But the child grows much quicker and you still take careof it when it's an adult (or even oldie if it survived after you never let it marry).

It seems like evolution to me. They came to Earth about 10 years ago, and humans took care of them. Generation after generation, they began to adopt human technology, characteristics, and practices, such as attending school, brushing their teeth, gambling, playing instruments, playing with toys, reproduction rituals, etc. It's fun to spend a week or two with a P1, then take a look at the V4s and see how much the Tamagotchi species has come as a whole in 10 short years, no? But no matter what, they're always dependent on the human race for care and guidance.
