How come I can't use it? Do I have to be a certain age or generation in order to use it at all?

Your tama has to be an adult and it needs a number, you can get a number from the family page....You will be able to call grandparents and parents.(just press the scroll button to get to it's # (thats A) The number will show up like this( this is just an example I made up so don't waste your time trying it)

the sellphone is the rare item in the shop codes

when you enter you're last shop code you will get the sellphone instead

no that will not happen there is no phone number besides the ones that were showed.

Whenever you dial a phone number on the cell phone whoever you called will appear then your Tamagotchi and whoever you phoned will start talking. Hope this helped.
