It wasn’t an inquiring town, no real interest about it at all. It was one of those forgotten places you find when you’re going on vacation to Disney World or something, just somewhere you pass by. Everyone within 500 miles of there knew it was dead, they could feel a strange cold sensation pass over them even before they entered town.

With a population of around 5065 and dropping, people questioned what the residence saw in this dead beat town they were stuck in; nothing, that’s what.

Townsfolk here either couldn’t afford to make a better living and move, made a living as a small town doctor, or others just couldn’t leave their hearts behind in a place where their parents had raised them. It must have been beautiful once upon a time, but soon turned dark due to young teens being influenced by modern gang violence. People moved, and this small town of *INSERT NAME HERE* was the product.

Now the kids are cold hearted, almost like the musky streets on a frigid fall morning. From living here, most of these young adults have learned or are learning they have no future; either being taught this or figuring it out for themselves, the fact was the same. It was implanted into their free spirited minds, slowly bringing them down, now never to be removed - with an acception of a couple of kids with a never-ending dream..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I think he’s waking up...” whispered Audrina. Nick blinked his eyes a couple times, finally getting his eyesight back to normal. The first thing his dark, misjudged eyes gazed upon was Audrina’s sweet face, capturing her green and inviting eyes just perfectly in the moonlight.
Nick shook his head, snapping out of his trance.
“What happened?” questioned Audrina, still staring in wonder.
“Dude, that’s the fourth knock-out this week, what’s wrong with you?!” demanded Travis, stomping around in frustration. His big blue eyes swelled up with anger, and his open hands formed into fists, but soon the tension was gone.
There was an awkward silence, probably just the three of them digesting their emotions. “Come on and get up before you get ran over.” Travis said. and he stuck out his hand. Nick simply pushed it away and stood up by himself, almost tumbling over. A scoff came from Travis, but it was ignored. Nick looked down, soon realizing his body had been lying on pavement for God knows how long.
“How long have I been here..?” inquired Nick, brushing off his dirt stained jeans.
“A couple of days - we thought you tried to work things out with your mom, but until we didn’t hear from you, we got worried..” Audrina said quietly, trying to hold back her crystal clear tears running from her eyes. Travis brought her into his arms, whispering something, probably not to be scared or sad.
“I’m sorry I worried you guys,” sighed Nick. “this guy was just, all up in my face, I guess temper sort of took over.”
“Dang right it did, I don’t know what we could have done if this was any worse.. You know what?? I don’t even want to think about it!” yelled Travis. He tugged his shaggy light brown hair, his unique way of showing frustration. Travis never usually had big blow ups like this, but this must have ticked him off quite a bit. It was usually Nick who was yelling, getting all peeveded off at Travis’ stupid decisions.
“Let’s get you back to Travis’ place and wash you off, the beat is pretty bad.” said Audrina. Her tears were finally all dried up, and she was ready to go.
They walked side by side, shoulder to shoulder, down the same deserted road that they had walked numerous times before. The same distorted feeling always came over them, but no one said a word.
These kids were never shown true affection, from parents, school mates, no one. Their lives and emotional breakdowns depended on each other for support, and they knew this well like the back of their hands. Unfortunately, no one else could understand, and this brings us to know, a display of abandonment affecting a couple of kids more than you can ever imagine- but deep down, far past all of the past experiences, there is a light that still bares a hopeful dream, awaiting a time to come out and shine.
This hasn't been edited very well, but you know I will. ;] I want to know what you think and what I should do to fix it up please and thanks. Oh yes, and please don't copy it, I would appreciate it. =]
You need an introduction. A way to give a short summary of what is going on instead of just going right into the story. Right now the way you have it is very confusing. I think if you put and introduction it will be fine.
Thanks, I was getting to that but I was tired of typing, lol.
Like you know when you read a book, like say.. Warriors, and it gives you that sort of 3 page begginning when you don't know what's happening yet, but you try to imagine? That's what I was sorta doing here, but I don't think it works, lol.
Thanks for the advice though. ;]
Okay, I took the advice given and wrote another part of the chapter. It was hard to try and explain their past while keeping the story going, but ideas and comments will help ut A LOT. :] Oh yes, sorry about the references to drugs and drinking, I can remove those and replace them with other words if needed
The three of them finally ended up in front of Travis’ place, gazing upon the wretched paint shop, smashed up windows and tall grass that had not been cut in months, even years. Travis’s mother must had been out drinking the night before, seeing as her beat up Cadillac was not in the gravel drive way. This was not a surprise, seeing as she had nothing better to do than get drunk and have a one night stand. 16 years ago, Travis was a result of one of these ‘one night stands’ and his mother Karla had never let him forget it.
Nick walked up to the front door, simply twisting the knob and the door swung open. The door was never locked, which was good in times like this. Cobwebs lined the walls, and nothing else. There was no second floor, no basement, just a one story house. Looking around in this place made you feel uneasy, it doesn’t get much worse than this.
“I think my mom actually paid the water bill for once, so let’s hope there’s some running water.” commented Travis as he sluggishly walked into the bathroom. Audrina and Nick followed, squeezing slightly to fit into the 3 by 3 room. Audrina made herself at ‘home’, sitting herself on the edge of the bathtub, while Nick sat on the sink, and Travis simply stood. Nick placed his hands on the taps, turning them to his preferred temperature and stuck his tattered hands underneath the sputtering water. He sighed in relief, and left them there for as long as he could possibly stand.
“You do NOT know how good this feels!” chuckled Nick. He wiped his hands on his ripped t-shirt, and sat back on the sink. A random thought came from Travis, as they always come. He sighed first and spoke.
“I’m so glad to have you guys, like, my mom doesn’t seem to care. She only keeps me so she has an excuse to get child care from the government, but spends it on booze instead.. I don’t even know who my father is, I don’t know where I can from, it’s like I’m a nobody, it’s just..” Travis couldn’t even finish his thought, but looked down in despair. Audrina stared at him sympathetically and spoke up.
“Your mother loves you Travis, she just has...”
“No she doesn’t love me, she despises me, she treats me like trash, I’m ashamed to call her mom anymore. I just can’t stand it!” exclaimed Travis. He turned around and put his head against the wall, while tears stumbled down his face.
As emotional as Travis was, he was raised tough and learned to be independent. Having a hard-core partier as a mom was bad enough as it was, but not knowing his dad was even harder. Sometimes Travis was afraid Karla, his mother, would end up dead from her heavy intoxications, but other times that’s just what he wanted.
“Just stop it, okay? We all have messed up families. My dad is dying for crying out loud, and my mom quit her job just to sit beside his bed and watch him wither away, and does she care about me? No. I have to pay for our house and stuff like that, while she’s sitting in a hospital, praying for something that’s just never going to happen. Maybe I’d like to see him for once, but I can’t stand to see her.” Nick’s eyes burned in furry, flashbacks passing through his head like race cars on a highway. Around this time, Nick would punch whatever was in sight, and there came his tightly clenched fist, slamming into the nearest wall. Audrina was a bit startled, not expecting such a reaction from her best friend.
Nick did have a point, his situation was just as bad. His father Benny had been in vegetative state for approximately 4 years and a couple months due to a sudden decrease in blood sugar from his diabetes, and this affected Nick badly. Believe it or not, his family used to be pretty normal, but Suzan made the choice to stand by her husbands side, leaving Nick to be buried in dust.
Travis and Nick awaited Audrina to tell her story, the one they heard many times before, but she stayed quiet.
Audrina’s father Joseph had killed himself when she was around two years old, so unfortunately she remembers almost nothing about him except for their very similar looks. Some say he killed himself because he was cheating, but most assume all the stress with owning a big corporation like his got to him. Her mother, Anne, took this a little too hard, falling into a world of drugs which she could not escape. Her love for her precious baby Audrina was not enough to overpower this addiction, so Audrina vowed to herself never to try drugs or to drink.
“Let’s get out of here.” mumbled Nick, and the three of them stood up and walked slowly out of the bathroom. They took a second to gaze upon the room, and jolted out of the house and down the street, not looking back at one of the three places which they hated the most; home.
Well, I don't entirely agree with you. Some stories get you a lot more into it when you start without an intro. And by the way, she/he did a very good intro for the town.
Some spellings were wrong, like peeveded, it's peeved.
Otherwise, it was very good. It's not the type of book I would read, but otherwise it was good.
Best Wiishes,
barky
Thank you, thank you,,
I love critique! xD
And "peeved" was a last minute change from a swear word that the filter caught, haha.
Ow my eyes hurt from the small font and all.
That...was...AWESOME!!!
But create new ways that the kids are having problems at home. Like, half of all of the stories had a parent drunk or drinking in it.
Other then that, I can't wait to see it on the Best Seller list!
