A New Home Part II

It’s been days since I over heard Chase talk about that so-called island. We’ve been out here for who knows how long with hardly any food or water, and I’m certain no one knows where we are, I thought bitterly. I didn’t say anything though, as much as I wanted to. Everyone else was doing it for me.

“Where are we?!” Sasha groaned over and over again.

“Where’s this island of yours Chase? You don’t even know where we are or what you’re doing do you?” Moni said, furious. Chase looked at her, puzzled, and a hurt expression started to form on his face.

“Oh, I overheard you and the paddle patrol over there talking about it, and planning not to tell us. We all did.” She said, glaring angrily at Chase. Chase’s bottom lip started to quiver, and tears filled his eyes. Feeling bad, I rested my hand on his shoulder. He looked up at me, and I gave him a loving smile. Keioni stared at Moni, annoyed. “Hey! No need to be rude! If it wasn’t for “The Paddle Patrol”, you’d probably be dead right now!” he exclaimed with Sasha nodding in agreement. Moni did that grunting noise she always made when she was angry, and rolled her eyes. Whatever, she muttered under her breath. Teto took on his roll as peacemaker in the group, and tried to calm everyone down. “Guys! Come on! You’re scaring the kids. What’s fighting gonna solve anyway? It’s not Chase’s fault that we haven’t found the island. He was only trying to help. You shouldn’t blame him.”

“Teto’s right.” I chimed in. “Fighting isn’t helping us find the island. We need to stick together. You know. Be a team. All for one and one for all.”

“Right!” Keioni said, nodding. Moni, still not very happy, turned her back, and remained silent. Chase looked up, his face tear stained. “I’m sorry guys. Maybe the map is a phony or something. I thought we’d find the island days ago.”

“You don’t need to apologize Chase. None of this is your fault. We’re just having a little bad luck right now.” I said.

Chase smiled. “Thanks Kali.” I looked over at Moni, who still had her back turned to us. She always was really moody. Even when we were kids. I never liked it when she got angry. Still, I thought she was wrong to yell at Chase like that. All he did was show Sasha and Keioni that map he found. I suddenly found myself just thinking about that map. I don’t know why, but it was all I thought about for quite some time. I became lost in my thoughts, like I was in my own world. I shut out all of the sounds and voices around me, and just thought. Suddenly, a horrific picture entered my mind. It filled my whole head and captured my thoughts. At first, I thought it was ridiculous, but after I pondered it for a while, it started to make sense, and that made me just want to hurl.

“What’s wrong Kali?” Keioni asked, looking worried.

“Chase, you were alone when you found that map right?” I asked.

“Yeah. Why?”

“Where was the Chief when you found it?”

“When I came into his hut, he said something about testing his canoe out for something important, and then he walked out.”

“And you guys know how we’d been hearing those strange rumbling noises?”

“Yeahhh.” Chase said looking confused.

“What are you getting at Kali?” Sasha asked

“Think about it guys! Why would the Chief have a map to another island in his hut? What is so important that he would be “testing” his canoe out for?

He knew that the volcano was going to erupt, and he was going to ditch the island, and leave the rest of us to die!” I said, getting angry.

“You’re right Kali! I don’t remember seeing him anywhere the night the volcano exploded. That monster left us to die!” Sasha screamed.

“I can’t believe he did that to us!” Chase exclaimed. I was so furious that I began to get dizzy. All of the energy seemed to drain from my body, and everything seemed to be spinning. I blinked, trying to get my vision to be still, but it got worse. I collapsed in my seat, and everything went black.

“Kali!” I heard everyone scream in unison. Their voices seemed to get farther and farther away from me with every second that went by. “Kali!” I heard, only a mere whisper now, and the voices disappeared altogether. Not knowing what was going on, I just laid there in the darkness, and suddenly everything just went blank.
