Looking else where for something other than tamagotchi, but similar? Well, I recomend these. These are from least to greatest.

1. VMIGO

2. NINTENDOGS

3. Giga pets

Dont lists

1. Blinkies

2. Aqua pets ( the get damaged easily and stop working often )

3. Miuchiz

 
Honestly, I'd recommend Digimon and old school Giga Pets as recommended cousins. Digimon is from the makers of Tamagotchi, and the older Giga Pets are just too darn fun.

You won't find older Giga Pets in stores now, but the Digimon Data Squad Digivice Data Link is available. I highly recommend it, the only problem I have with them is that they only evolve when they're battling.
