when you change the battery does your tamagotchi start as an egg again and does the generation go back to one.

no, not if you dont want it to, you can select the 'download' option and it will start from where the battery died

thank goodness for that option.. concidering how fast these batteries supposably die, it would be rather annoying if it reset

We'd never get past the first generation of tamagotchis!!

I dont know y but my batteries have been lasting 4 ages and i have been connecting heaps!

Yeah my first Connection has passed the usual 2-3 week battery life expectation and in a week it'll be a month old. But watch the minute I post this, in a few days shy of its 4th week it'll die hehe. I also connect a lot with my other tamagotchis and my sisters'. Maybe they started making the batteries better.
