What is the difference between a v1 tamagotchi and the original one that came out in 1997?

If by the "V1" you mean the Connection V1, then the biggest difference is that they can connect to each other. Another big difference is that the V1 can live from generation to generation. On the original Tamagotchi from 1996/1997 (also known as "P1") you raise the character from egg to death. It never mates.

You can find out more about both of these models by reading their instruction sheets. Click here to go to the Original Instruction Manuals Index. Within it there are links to all the instruction sheets we have scanned and posted.

Ok so I guess my next question is how do I tell if mine is a p1 or a p2 and how do I tell if another is a v1 or a v2?

P1 & P2 have different backgrounds (wallpaper behind the screen.) The P1 has a checkered background. The P2 has a swirly background.

Here are pictures where you can clearly see the backgrounds.

To tell the difference between a V1 & V2 you're going to have to start one up (if it isn't already running.) Activate the Game menu. Version 1 has two games: Dance and Jump. Version 2 has four games: Jump, Bump, Heading, and Slot. (I'm not sure if you can see all four games if your V2 character isn't an adult.)

Some help for Binary

Another telltale sign: On V2, going to the game menu will ask "game, shop, item," And I believe something else. Also Gen2 has slightly different characters, like the bad care teen

Kutchitamatchi=P1

Hashitamatchi=P2

Also, Gen1 (P1) has a white baby(?) and Gen2(P2) has a black one(?). It also has no genders and these are about the size of Tama Minis.

The shape / design of the babies is also slightly different on the V1 vs V2.

V1 - Baby is round and black (male) or white (female)

V2 - Baby has a little "bump" on top of it's head - same m/f colours as the V1

Ok thanks guys. I have figured out that I have a p2 because mine has a swirly background and a v2 because I don't have the dance game. Thanks again!

You're right except for the fact that the baby on Gen1 is black (Bebitchi) and the baby on Gen2 is white (Shirobebitchi).

Also if you're good at spotting shell designs then you might be able to tell v1 and v2 apart if you ever get a new one which you're not sure of the version. And if you get an Australian one, the v1 has a simple keychain while the v2 has a little strap thingymabob.
