Kinz Means Family

It was Monday, AGAIN. I hated every part of Monday. But what I hate the most is that kids share their weekends in Developmental Guidance. And what every kid starts with is “My parents…”

What I hate so much about it is it reminds me of how I don’t have both of my parents. My dad divorced my mom 6 years ago, and the minute he filed it, he moved out to an apartment of his own. The second the divorce was complete, he got engaged to his girlfriend he was dating BEFORE he divorced Mom, and I never saw him again because he moved.

As I sat up in my bed, I looked at my only Webkinz, a Collie named Emily. Because of all the family issues my mom and I have had, she considers Emily part of the family. I consider Emily part of the Family too because she’s one of the only people there are IN the family.

My mom called me to get ready for school, so I got dressed and such, then I snuck Emily in my backpack. So whenever I get ticked off during a class, I can open my locker in the hall and look at her, because she’s family.

My step dad drove me to school. I walked out of the car, towards the school, ready to face the evilness of Monday.

I walked to my locker, and unpacked. I put Emily on the top shelf of the two shelves in

my locker. That was her special place. Today she was wearing a Wheel of Wow T-Shirt. Every day and every night I dressed her, because my mom got me LOTS of Webkinz clothes for her. I even dressed her as a Witch for Halloween and Santa Clause for Christmas. I even put her in PJs when the night came. Emily was basically spoiled. I petted her furry head and I went to class.

In Developmental Guidance, about 10 kids told about what their parents took them or bought them that weekend.

“Claire is there something you did this weekend?” my teacher asked.

“No.” I said.

Every other week, the teacher asked me what I did. I either answered in “No,” “Nothing,” or “I can’t remember.” I usually never say anything because it would remind me of my dad who left me and my mom.

Now I have a step dad. I also have a baby brother, but the last time I saw him, I was 3. I saw my parents cry and the doctor take him away and I haven’t seen him since. I always wondered what happened to him.

About a year after my dad left, my mom met my step dad and they started dating. Four years after that, they married.

Because I was only 7 when my dad left, I believed he would come back and remarry my mom. But when my mom started dating my step dad, all that hope was already gone.

Then someone said of how they got a new puppy over the weekend. That reminded me of Sadie, and I tried to hold back the tears. Sadie was my beloved Collie. Sadie looked like Emily. Sadie was a big dog. Sadie used to follow me around when she was still with me. Sadie would always play with me. Sadie helped me get through the divorced with licks of love. Sadie got hit by a car last year and died. I never forgave the guy who ran over her since. Now, wherever I go, there’s a big empty spot in my personal space where Sadie would be.

Emily reminded me of Sadie. Emily’s fur reminded me of Sadie. Everything about Emily reminded me of Sadie. Emily I know will never leave, so I keep her close to my heart, and I love her. I feel that Sadie’s spirit rests in Emily, because Emily comes with me wherever I go, and all the nice things Emily says in Webkinz World would be the things Sadie would say if she could speak English, even though Sadie already learned English.

I got Emily on Sadie’s birthday the year Sadie died. When we buried Sadie, I had Emily wear nothing in respect, and I guess that’s when Sadie left her spirit in Emily as I clutched Emily to my heart.

At the end of the day, I stroked Emily, and placed her in my backpack, and left the school in my step dad’s car.

As we drove home, I remembered my first dad.

One week, my dad would be gone for almost the whole day. Then on the last day of the week, all I remember is my parents fighting, so I ran to my room. When the fight was over, I heard my dad pack his things angrily, and my mom came into my room, and told me how her and dad weren’t going to be married anymore, and she would be going to divorce court, and let me stay home.

I cried that entire week. And everything my dad owned was gone. It was like he never was here. My mom always told me that to thank god he left behind. I was thankful too. I would have been always sick watching my dad’s girlfriend with him, and she is the reason why my dad is gone.

I was always sad watching my mom and my step dad, but I hate to believe it, but my step dad seems a lot better than my dad was.

Now, my mom and step dad have been married for over a year (their anniversary was last week), Emily is like my dog, and my mom is pregnant with twins, and her stomach is really big now, and the babies are due in a week. Also, my Webkinz account is going to expire in a couple weeks, and I haven’t decided to get a new Webkinz yet.

Two days later, I was putting some pictures in of my mom and step dad, and some scans of the babies in my mom’s tummy, and myself, and even pictures of Emily inside of our photo albums.

I flipped through them, and I saw pictures. I saw pictures of Sadie, I saw pictures of my mom giving birth to my brother, I saw scans of my brother, then I saw pictures of my parents wedding, and before those pictures, there were pictures of me being born anc such, and my dad was in none of those pictures. Just another man…

--

The next day, I asked my mom a lot of questions. I asked her where’d Caleb, my baby brother. I asked who’s that man in my pictures of when I was born and such, and why pictures of my dad were after those pictures.

“Well, since your 13, I suppose your ready to hear the answers.” She said. “About Caleb, when he was a baby, he didn’t make it. I was going to have Ron (step dad) take you shopping while I put flowers on Caleb’s grave. Today’s his birthday. Would you like to come too?”

I nodded my head.

“About that man and your father, that man was your real father. I mean your blood father. The one who got me pregnant with you. I mean my first husband. He died when you were just a baby, then I met your other father. The one who got me pregnant with Caleb. I’m sorry I never told you this.”

“It’s ok, Mom. It’s ok.” I said.

--

As we drove up to Caleb’s grave, I held Emily and my mom handed me a pack of Webkinz Trading Cards and a Webkinz Trading Card Album that just came out.

“These are for you.” She said.

“Thanks, Mom. I needed this album, and the trading cards are great!” I said.

“Were here.” My step dad said.

We walked to the grave. My mom handed me flowers.

“Give these to Caleb.” She said.

I put down Emily on the grass and placed the trading cards and album right next to her. Then I put down the flowers.

“Happy Birthday, Caleb. I’m your older sister. Nice to finally meet you.” I said. Then I looked at Emily. “Emily’s happy to meet you too.” I said.

As my dad helped my pregnant mom into the car, I sat on the grass with Emily and opened my pack of trading cards. There were 5 cards for my game, there was a code card, and then I found another card. There was a card for a free virtual pet! It was for a free Lil’ Kinz Tiger! Lil’ Kinz are supposed to be the little siblings of Webkinz!

“Look at this, Emily!” I said to her as I showed her the card.

“Thanks, Caleb.” I said to him, believing his spirit was in the virtual tiger.

I picked up Emily, the cards, and the album, and I got into the car.

“Look, Mom! Look, Ron! I got a free virtual Lil’ Kinz Tiger in the Trading Card pack!” I said.

“That’s great!” My mom said.

“What are you going to name it?” my step dad said.

“Collin.” I said.

Then I noticed 2 flowers got stuck to Emily’s butt.

“Wait!” I said.

I ran and put the first flower on Caleb’s grave.

“Can we put this flower on Sadie’s grave?” I asked.

“Let’s go!” My step dad said.

--

When we got back from the dog cemetery, my mom talked to me.

“I’m sure Sadie would have like the flower.” Mom said.

“It was Emily’s idea.” I said.

“You know what; I think Sadie’s spirit is inside of Emily.” Mom said.

‘Me too, Mom. Me too.” I said.

--

The next day, Mom went into labor.

“What is it, honey?” my step dad said.

“THE BABIES ARE COMING!” Mom said.

My dad came into my room while I was playing on Webkinz, and told me the babies were coming.

I grabbed my pink carrier, and put Collin’s Card in the side pouch, then I put Emily in the carrier with her pink shirt on.

We drove into the hospital, and my mom was put in a room. My dad went with her and I sat in the Waiting Room, petting Emily.

Then my step dad ran in and handed me his laptop.

“You can play Webkinz on this while you wait for the babies to be born.” He said.

Then he rushed back in to mom’s room.

I placed Emily next to me, and logged on.

I played with Collin on Webkinz, because he’s only virtual and this would be one of the only times I could play with him. He needs attention too.

Then after about two hours, my mom was still delivering and I switched to Emily.

Then it was eventually midnight and I fell asleep.

Then I woke up at 2 AM, then saw it and remembered I couldn’t play on Webkinz until 4 AM, so I closed the laptop and stroked Emily, and then I fell asleep again.

Then I woke up at 4 AM saying that the babies were delivered just a few minutes ago

I went into my mom’s room and saw two twin girls. And this time, they made it.

I smiled.

“I am going to name them, Katherine and Madison.” My mom said.

Then I remembered when I got Emily. I had always wanted a Webkinz because my friends had Webkinz, then my mom took me to a card store, and I was surrounded by the smell of candles, and I picked out a Collie, because I loved my Sadie who was at home at the time. I brought Emily home, and Sadie sniffed and licked Emily. Then I called each of my friends and gave them my username, and they all logged on, and I invited them all over to Emily’s Room, and we had a big adoption party.

“Hey, Claire. How about we go to the gift shop and buy you a Webkinz?” my step dad said.

“Sure.” I said.

We walked down to the hospital gift shop. There were lots of Webkinz. But the ones that caught my eye were the Lil’ Black Poodle and the Lil’ White Poodle.

I showed Emily them, then I placed Emily in my carrier and picked up the poodles.

“Can we buy these?” I said.

“Sure.” He said.

He purchased them.

“I’ll name the white one Patricia and the black one Cassandra” I said. “Thanks, Dad.” I said.

He smiled.

“You know what “web” means?” He said.

“It means ‘internet.’” I said.

“You know what ‘kin’ means?” He said.

“No. What?” I said.

“Family.” He said.

Then I knew from right there, everything was going to be all right from now on…

THE END
