My tamagotchis always appear to yawn at 8:30pm but don't go to sleep until 9. So one night i turned the lights out at 8:30 and they both went straight to sleep. Has anyone else found this? I really like this new feature as it was always a pain having to stay up till late with all my other tamagotchis.

Yes, it's usefull. A Tamagotchi goes to bed when it can no longer stay awake, but that doesn't mean it's not tired before-hand. 
If you turn the lights out before they fall asleep themselves, they'll go right to sleep and you'll raise their happiness, too.
