Upgrade TamaTalk?
Posted 25 August 2010 - 11:49 AM ( #1 )
I wanted to start a conversation about TamaTalk. There have been LOADS of suggestions for updates to TamaTalk for things like a mobile version of the site, app version of the site, profile page messaging, better photo gallery, better chat, status updates and more like that over the years. The problem is right now we are running on old software. I've seriously been considering these features but they just aren't possible in the old software. The fix? Upgrade the software. I looked at the latest and greatest version of Invision Power Board and it provides all of these features and looks REALLY cool. The problem is this costs a decent chunk of change to purchase. I figure it would cost $224 for the forum, gallery and chat. I find it hard to move forward making that purchase because money is already tight aas it is but also because I am not sure everyone here even wants it. So I am starting this topic to put the question out there... Would you all find this an interesting upgrade? Also, would people be interested in maybe doing a fundraiser type thing where we all help pitch in some money towards the cost (in other words would these new features and upgrade be good enough for you to consider helping to pay for)?
I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this.

You know when you type in tamatalk.com and it says welcome to tamatalk.

Oh, and definitely a better word filter. The cussing is so bad in the chat now that I can't even stand to be in it for a minute and a half.
Mobile and app versions, I don't have Internet on my phone, so I kinda find it useless. Hey, doesn't mean that someone else won't, though.
As for everything else, I'm kinda neutral, as I don't go to the photo gallery and such anyway.

I do but wouldn't need them. The latest version of IPB has its own free app that let's you do the same thing.@admin Do you still have the Tapatalk urs and pass i pm'd you
Thanks for all the input. I'd love to hear more. I don't want to push any of this through unless others will find it useful or nice to have.

You can change the background of the chat to whatever you'd like.I'm also especially up for a new chat. The chat really needs to be upgraded, maybe with a more Tamatalk-y feel, since the blue background feels so plain.
I agree about a better word filter, but you can't get one that filters out every single typing quirk out there.

I definitely like the thought of a better photo gallery(one that doesn't take 6+months to post? ;D) and status updates. A better chat would be awesome, even though I don't use it much anymore.
I'm not sure what you mean by profile page messaging, and I wouldn't be using an app as I don't have a fancy phone, lol.
Is there any way for you to give us a preview of what the upgraded version might look like? Screen shots of a site that already has it maybe?
If we're able to come up with the funds, I'm all for it.
Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to help with the cost :/ I'm currently unemployed and have no income what so ever.

I and a dunce for not thinking of linking to screen shots or demo. The best thing is to take a peak at Invision's own forums for a peak at what is possible now. Keep in mind that the appearance would be changed a lot from the default way that you will be seeing here. Take a look at the features and not just the look and colors of the site.
A look at the main forum page: http://community.invisionpower.com/
A look at a sample profile page which features status updates, comments/messaging on the profile page that others can leave you and stuff: http://community.inv...44-ditchmonkey/
A peak at the gallery: http://community.inv...er.com/gallery/ and also http://community.inv...5063-wallpaper/ as well as the info page at http://www.invisionp...oducts/gallery/
A look at the skin for mobiles and a separate slightly different skin can be seen by going to the pulldown menu at the bottom that says IP.Board
Some basic chat screenshots can be seen at http://www.invisionp.../products/chat/
There are more features like the ability to ignore a user and have the system hide EVERYTHING that ignored person posts and does from you and things like that.

PLUS IT WILL BE TAMATALK-IZEABLE RIGHT????The upgrade would be a pretty big one. I'm not looking for a repeat of BLM, trust me.
These have all been things people have asked for over the years that just aren't possible with our old software (our version hasn't been updated officially since 2003 which makes it ancient and older than TamaTalk itself!).

The status updates and profile messaging thing doesn't appeal to me in any way, I already have Facebook and that's enough for me. Better chat would be nice and I'm not fussed about photo galleries.
So basically I don't really think it'll be worth it, especially seeing as the cost is that high.
Small changes are always good but a whole site re-do is just a bit much in my opinion.

I personally would be up for that.
