It depends on what genre you're into. But:
Azumanga Daioh - This is a really good manga that's hilarious, and has awesome characters that are all kooky in their own special ways.
Gakuen Alice- Great manga, it's basically about this special Academy where kids with special powers called alices go. It sounds lame but the powers in this story are all unique.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica- Hasn't been released in the US yet, but can easily be found readable online translated in english. It's about magical girls, and sounds like a turnoff, but there's a dark twist to it and it's not as sweet and girly as it sounds.
Higurashi no naku koro ni/ Higurashi When They Cry- Great, but expect blood and murders. It's a murder mystery story.

In that case, definitely Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, although it doesn't really have much romance..

I would recommend S.G.T. Frog, Inuyasha, Magic Knight Rayearth, or Angelic Layer. :3
