Depends on the version. In V3s, you will be able to choose what character you get, provided that you debug it correctly. I have been advised against debugging V4.5s because it'll send it into hyperspeed and possibly damage your Tamagotchi (but that's the case with pretty much any Tamagotchi you debug if you're not careful). It seems like one would be able to debug a V5, according to THIS topic. I'm not sure if there has been success in debugging a V6 yet, but you can view the progress of that project HERE.
