I've noticed a few posts by different members recently complaining that their TamaTalk user name has been "hacked".

TamaTalk is a pretty secure site and to be honest, there are really only a couple of ways another person can "hack" your account.

In most cases the "hacker" is usually someone who is able to use the same computer as you - such as a sibling or friend at home or school / work who may also visit TamaTalk or who knows you visit TamaTalk.

The easiest way for someone to "hack" your account is when you don't sign out of TamaTalk properly.

Signing out of TamaTalk is like closing the door behind you when you leave your house. Your password is like the key to get back into the house.

Don't get "hacked" :

Sign Out When you've finished visiting the site.

1. Click on your profile pic (top right hand side of the computer screen) and click on the "
Sign Out
" link.
OR
2. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the TamaTalk home page and click on the "
Delete Cookies
" link.
DON'T just close the browser window!

You may still be logged in and the next person who uses your computer can bring up the previous site visited. If you're still logged in they can post whatever they want on your user name.

You are responsible for your account / user name - and you are also responsible for whatever is posted on this site under that user name - whether or not it was you, your sibling, your ex-best friend or your dog
;)

Sign Out and use your password to make sure it is only you who gets to use your account.

Keep your password safe.

Memorise it. Don't write it down and never (never, never) share it with anyone else - no matter how much you think you can trust them - not your sibling, not your best friend or your dog ;)

Much of this advice is already posted in our Users Guide to TamaTalk: How to Keep Your Account Safe: https://www.tamatalk....r-account-safe/

(For those who think it is just about not posting personal info, you might want to refresh your memory by reading that topic)

@Orandatchi

Clearly, their dog or cat has an odd sense of humor if they hacked an account and posted here, of all topics. TamaMum said something about your dog hacking the account. She was not joking. Guides are to be taken seriously. I mean it.

Thanks for posting this, TamaMum. I have my own computer with a password to turn it on (it goes off automatically after 1 minute of not being used) and never ever give out my password or write it down, but at least no-one else will have hacking problems now. It must be horrible to get hacked... :(

One flaw with not writing down passwords... you sometimes forget what it is if you stay logged on all the time. It's also hard to keep track of dozens of passwords if you don't write them down and keep them in a safe place. I'm the only one who uses my computer so I have nothing to worry about. But if people do want to write down their passwords, maybe keep them in a diary and lock it with a key? ;)

Thanks so much for posting this TamaMum. I've personally never been "hacked", but a few of my friends have, and I'm glad they know what they can do to stop it now. :)

You should always log out ;)

You don't need heaps of different passwords for different forums. Decide on a few memorable ones and use them regularly - then you won't forget what they are... ;)

So many people complain about how they're hacked but they can't be bothered to memorise a password to keep their account safe (and then try to blame another member of the family or a friend when we apply any moderator controls on their user name).

I'm just saying out that it doesn't have to happen if more care is taken.

This doesn't give much insight into when your password has actually been guessed at all.

I have my own computer which is password protected too - but I still always log out of TamaTalk and use my password to get back in.

(What if you leave your computer unattended for a while - a sneaky sibling or friend home from school could easily post stuff if you are not in the room for a minute or two - seen it happen to lots of ppl) ;)

Thanks for the advice, TamaMum. I'll be sure to log out from now on when I leave the forums. Just to be safe. :)

Well, I always sign out but I also have another trick... I change my password every single time I log in! LOL, it takes up time but I've been doing that for weeks. :)

LOL suddenly today I just can't sign in to my account... I think it is pretty weird because I could aways sign in to my account with out a problom. :(
