I've been looking at some Tamagotchis on ebay and I'm having a really hard time telling the difference between V1s & V2s and also V5s & V5.5s. I was wondering if there was any specific way to tell them apart just from a picture because the seller doesn't always know which version it is or they will label it wrong. If there isn't an easy way to tell them apart from a picture then could someone post pictures of which designs are which versions? Thanks :)

Yo, jzwolf530 here. It IS a challenge to tell apart the V5 and the V5.5 when you haven't started them up. However, a couple things to keep in mind: most V5.5s have a more "star/celebrity" design and the package SOMETIMES specifies it as a v5.5 model. Feel free to post any pictures of an suspicious tama and I'll do what I can to see if I can spot which version.

V1s and V2s are kinda tricky since you really need to start them up to see which one it is. I would do my best to ask questions to the seller and see if they will start it up to check. Also, many V1s had very simple designs (if any).

Tamatown123, the v1 on that link is a p1

Jzwolf530, thanks for the tips!
I was just about to say the exact same thing :p

It seems unless they are turned on it's pretty hard to tell the difference between the 5 and the 5.5, you'd have to contact the seller and get them to answer questions about the food / games on it.

It's not actually all that difficult. Generally the v5 tamas have things designed on them that pertain to "family" or "love my family" or "Familitchi" or just pretty or nifty patterns on the shell like the cookie one, the sakura Flower one, or buildings of different colors, etc. Also the background looked like a family room or a normal typical room background.

The v5.5 was supposed to be celebrity family so these ones are more geared towards "hollywood" type of designs like blue with palm trees and the walk of fame (stars on the streets), or white with red stars, purple with cameras and flashes from cameras, tamagotchi red carpet, cushion cut red gem design, popcorn and movie film, and blue with big purple star.... I think there are a few other types of shells for the celebrity version, but those are ones that you see probably most often. The background on the 5.5 was like a some what circle type of pattern.... I don't know exactly how to describe it sort of like a stage background I guess, but it doesn't look like a normal room.

Also if it has a keychain ring it was a US or EU released version, the ones with the "tamakeys" were Bandai Asia releases I believe.

I'm afraid that the picture of the "v1" on the first link is incorrect.

If I'm not wrong, that picture is showing either a gen1 or a gen2.

Mothra gives really good information on her tamenagerie site, she provides accurate pictures of at least all v1 releases, though she dosen't have quite all the v2 designs on picture.

I'm linking to her v1 site here:

My one own tip is that the v2 baby has legs, but the v1 baby dosen't.

I've got one of each, and apart from shell design they're impossible to tell apart without battery in them.

Hope this helps! :kuribotchi:

Sorry, my bad :p

I have found some usefull information

The shape / design of the babies is also slightly different on the V1 vs V2.

V1 - Baby is round and black (male) or white (female)

V2 - Baby has a little "bump" on top of it's head - same m/f colours as the V1

Thanks to TamaMum
