If you take the batteries out, does that mean you will have to start over when putting new ones in?

Yes, the old vintage tama's don't have a save system, taking the batteries out will reset your tamagotchi.
So better make sure you put new ones in before you hatch an egg.

awww</3... oh well then....
i just got mine from ebay (picture on my profile, top left) and there is a smudge on the iner-screen, i dont think you can see it though...
i guess when my tama passes on, i'll clean it off then...
there is no major damage...
