I think it somewhat depends on what instrument your character is playing, though.

it will always change, but what they play most often will be influenced by there instrument.
Examples: they'll play R&B or Jazz more often when they play Saxophone
They'll play Rock more often with a guitar.

Judging by my personal experience, the genre changes rather frequently up until the adult stage, when it only may change sometimes after playing.
