How many tamas do you need to raise to Tamatomo to unlock areas? I will be on my 4th Tamatomo soon and I a yet to see any new locations unlocked apart from 'Tama Meal'

If I remember correctly I got my first new destination after my 4th tamatomo adult, and a second destination after another 4. After that I'm not sure. Maybe it is every four?

Yes, a new destination unlocks every four new Tamatomos. 
4 = Henshin Jo
8 = Patchi Onsen
12 = Melody Land
16 = Concert
20 = Waru Cafe
24 = Uranai No Yakata
28 = Gotchi School
32 = Daiou no Shiro (Gotchi King's Castle)
Notes:
4 = Henshin Jo
8 = Patchi Onsen
12 = Melody Land

Notes:
- The new destinations will be seen under the door icon, not under the Food icon (like Tama Meals/Snacks)
- Tamatomos must be "unique". (eg. if you already have a Tamatomo for Mametchi, getting another Mametchi does not count)
