There is no pause function. However, you can effectively pause it by leaving it at the clock set screen.

On average (sound off + medium brightness), a standard pair of AAA batteries can run on 4 weeks until depleting.
Another alternative way to pause an iD L is by taking the batteries out. You can continue where you left off later on because the iD L saves data.
Simply select "Load" when you put the batteries back in.
