In an attempt to go back to my childhood, I purchased a new Tamagotchi online without doing much research and when it came in the mail today, it was in Japanese! ): It seems that an English version is going to be hard to come by and I don't want to give mine up, but it has been quite a while (10+ years) since I've owned one and so I can't really just play around and figure it out. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find English directions or should I just give up and send it back?

Not to worry! They are really easy to figure out! 
Heres a link that should help https://www.tamatalk....u-stats-screen/ (not my topic or link of course but it helped me alot!!) and if you're anything like me and couldn't figure out how to put the batteries in all you have to do is press the button directly under the square that says bandai 2004 and while doing that slide downwords and place triple a batteries in
Its a really fun toy and pretty simple. It's great for nostaligia and collection so i reccomend not sending it back or at least saving it and selling it on ebay in a few years

It's actually really easy to deal with the Japanese even if you've literally never seen it before. As well as looking at the topics recommended by other people, just explore the different options. You'll definitely work it out before anything happens to your character. I got my iD L when I was 9 or 10 and worked almost everything out for myself before the baby stage was over.
The only thing that some people get really upset over is accidentally selecting reset when replacing the batteries. Nothing else is going to kill your Tama before you figure out how to use it, but this is. The first option is download, and make sure to remember that!
