Tamagotchi and 90's nostalgia

Despite things looking kind of grim currently on the US front I really don't think we've seen the last of Tamagotchi on American shores. It may take a few years but sooner or later a wave of 90's nostalgia is going to hit and companies are going to want to cash in on the nostalgia older 90's kids have for the decade. Bandai, having had one of the most popular toys of the decade will probably jump at the chance to cash in and release an updated Tamagotchi.

As an 80's kid I've seen it before. Currently merchandisers are falling all over themselves to appeal to adult 80's kids. The toy shelves are full of 80's throwback lines and the theatres are showing blockbuster films based on 80's properties. We're in the middle of 80's mania right now but in a few years it'll be the 90s' turn.

And frankly I expect pop culture to get a little bit cooler when that happens. You 90's kids don't let the 80's kids put one over on you. As an 80's kid myself I can tell you most of your stuff was better than ours. Your cartoons are better, your toys are better, heck the only thing about the 80's I like better than the 90's are the movies. But even then the 90's gave us two of my all time favorite films, Dragonheart and Small Soldiers.

So don't give up. The 90s' time is coming again. And I'd be shocked if a Tamagotchi revival ( a real revival with actual devices. not just a phone app ) doesn't come with it.

I expect a jump of 90's stuff. Many shows originally released in the 80's have come back already, some recently. (MLP, CareBears, Popples, Turtles) Digimon came back to nicktoons, if Bandai America still has rights... I would expect that to be a first pet back for some reason.

Lots of kids love what we loved, but I don't think some realize they are from the 80's. MLP vs FiM, for a point, it was way more fluffy and tea-party like when today, it has a meme and Pinkie Pie.

Even some early 90's is slowly trying to come back, or for a 3rd time. I don't think it will be too long...

I find most 80's cartoons to be nearly unwatchable now. I used to be a huge He Man fan as a kid but a couple years ago I caught an episode and it was horrible. I'll admit Transformers still holds up pretty well. I don't cringe a lot while watching it like I did with He Man. But Transformers and Ninja Turtles are the only 80's cartoons I can still enjoy. Most are garbage. And even with the Turtles the first movie blows the cartoon out of the water and the latest Nickelodeon owned incarnation is fantastic. 80's toys are great if you like action figures and cutesy stuffed animals. I don't. But if you had offered me a Tamagotchi back then I would have gladly burned all my stuffed animals and action figures for a single Tama. As for TV, the only 80's show I still love is Alf. I loved it as a kid and I still love it when I watch it on the Hub.

90's cartoons make 80's cartoons look pathetic. Animaniacs, Pinky and The Brain, Tiny Toon Adventures, Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles, Road Rovers, Freakazoid, Stunt Dawgs, Earthworm Jim and the list goes on. I'd struggle to find even a few 80's cartoons still worth watching but I rattled that 90's list off without even stopping to think. And toys? 90's kids had electronic pets that were fun for adults and kids. The 80's had Teddy Ruxpin, a talking bear that just lip synched to a cassette and Petster, a nice concept and the first electronic pet ever, but it was obscure, expensive and hard to find. The cheap version of Petster was $30 and all it really did was roll around and respond to claps. Rolling around on it's own without human guidance was a pretty neat trick at the time, but they just couldn't manage to get most stores to carry it. The deluxe Petster was close to $100. Places like Wal Mart, K-Mart and Kay Bee Toys wouldn't touch it. Which I never understood since they carried Teddy Ruxpin which was the same price but did less.

I don't really like vintage Tamagotchi... the 90s isn't nostalgic for me because V4 was my first version and I prefer modern characters like Kuromametchi and Uwasatchi and normal Mametchi.

Just look at tumblr! There are millions of posts dedicated to being a "90's kid"

Sadly, I don't see any return of tamagotchi in the near future

Same here, I don't think there going to make any more Tamagotchi's and they will just make even more apps, like the Angel App is in development. Anyway, BanDai America has sold the Tamagotchi rights to this other brand which says Tamagotchi is about lipstick and fashion.

That's just my 2 cents
