I know the built-in Tamas have favorites with Pierce food and items, but is it possible for Pierce characters to have favorites with downloaded items via infrared?

Well all of the character's favorite items are already built-in, including the pierce characters. 
I think the pierce characters' favorite items are usually either on the piercing, but sometimes just built-in items on the P's. They do not require downloaded items, but I assume there are downloadable items that will also give the pierce characters happy stamps (although it is not required to use the downloaded items).

I was just curious if somehow Pierce characters can get puzzle pieces from eating or playing with downloaded items. I'm gonna have to give it a test with one of the Dream Coffret characters and find out. Thanks for your reply.
