I was trying to get a Puchitchi on my V4 so I could get a Makiko, but instead I got a Mohitamatchi. Am I thinking about this the wrong way? Will I still be able to get into the Meme family for a Makiko?

you need a memetchi to get makiko, not puchitchi.
and yes you can, if you marry your character to a character in the meme family.

I was asking if a Mohitamatchi would be able to evolve into something from the meme family, and I thought that I needed a Puchitchi for that. Sorry for the confusion. :3

mohitamatchi is a toddler and so is puchitchi, toddlers are random and don't belong to a certain family, so yes it's still posible to get someone from the meme family (if your previous character married a character from the meme family)

Actually I was surfing the internet when I found this growth chart: https://www.tamatalk.com/IB/topic/99281-tamagotchi-v4-growth-chart/ (You have to scroll down a little). Specific toddlers apparently do give you specific families. Like tamafan said, just try to marry your tama to someone in the Meme family.
