If you reset it, all progress and data will be lost (Items, memory, etc.) and you'll get an egg on the screen.
If the batteries go flat, get new ones. When you put them in, there will be 2 options: Load (Top) or reset (Bottom).

Usually it "saves" whenever something happens such as when it evolves or when you connect it with another tama or download something. I think it also saves itself periodically at certain times of day but I'm not sure what those times are.

I asked a similar question a while back. Here's the answer I got.
-Waking up
-Infrared Connection
-Growing up
-Getting Sick [At least as a baby.]
I tested this with my iD L and it seems to be right.
