It looks like a legit Tamagotchi but not one I've seen. But I think it could be an ocean. Is it or just a really good knockoff?

That is the purple Japanese Umino. It is legitimate :) The Japanese oceans are much cheaper than the American version...I came across this listing earlier today, and it is quite a good deal!

Here is a ink to an image online of both the american designs, and the Japanese ocean designs. Hope this helps :)  http://tama-extra.co...ans.0161419.jpg

Well when I get money for one I will have to hunt one down. Just so I'm clear, Japanese versions are typically cheaper, right?

Heaps cheaper :D New uminos usually sell for $40 - $70 new, while the US ocean is several hundred.

Yep, and so glad to have gotten mine back in the day when new.  I have the blue bubbles one. They are really difficult to keep alive. I never got one past a baby, so I don't play with mine any more.(No, I'm not interested in selling it).

I recognise that photo - it was taken by an ex-TamaGuide here - Kyliesmum (see this post made a long time ago discussing the difference in price between English lang and Japanese lang Oceans:
