My wife recently managed to get hold of en English Tamagotchi IDL, and so she could download games, toys etc... to it she picked up an IRdA adaptor from ebay which installed on my PC with no problems.

Our issue occurs when we try to connect the Tamagotchi to the PC via the Infrared dongle, as the IDL screen goes from Standy, to Connect, to Failed, but the Send files icon does not appear on my desktop (I've watched a few youtube vids trying to figure this out!).

I'm using windows 7 and I've noticed other people having issues with that version of the operating system, so does anyone have a workaround for this issue, or am I doomed to a grumpy wife until I can borrow a Windows XP laptop and try again?

From my experience you need to attempt quite a few times until the send file icon shows up. After you get it, open the send dialogue and make sure you don't close it even if the connection is lost so that you can quickly send a file next time it reconnects.

You also will need to experiment with different adapter speeds and see which one works (try from slowest up).

She's going to borrow a windows XP laptop and try that, I'll encourage her to be persistent :)

Thanks for the advice, I'll update once I know how she got on.

The problem here is that it doesn't trigger the transfer software when we go through the connection step... not sure why, could be a security setting in windows 7 that I'm not aware of.

The good news is that she's got it working on a borrowed Vista laptop (worked first time too lol) so she's happily messing with her Tamagotchi as we speak. Somewhere I have a gen 1 in storage, I really should dig it out...

Certain IRdA adapters seem to have a lot of problems with Windows 7 so if that doesn't work it may be worth getting a different one.
Other than that I agree with the above, keep trying to connect and once you get the send programme window up on the laptop don't close it, select the item you're going to want to send and then connect so when you have that small opportunity you can hit the send button quickly. If you do it in time then the connection shouldn't fail.
I have the same kind of problem with mine :/ Computers just don't seem to like the TMGCs.

So the English iD L Tamagotchi are able to use the Download function despite the instructions saying on pg 17 "Not available"?

Or is the booklet saying that the instructions itself is "Not available". Confused... u_u;;;

Yes you can use it, I have the English IDL and I could download everything, just that all the downloads are in Japanese :)

On another note, I did manage to use the same adapter on Windows 7, but I had to use same settings that worked on XP - for transceiver type Sigma Tel 4012 and for speed 9600 (the lowest). (this can all be set in device manager by double-clicking on the irda adapter and going to the advanced tab)

I think old cellphones with infrared is easier than laptops. I use my friend's phone for downloading items. I tried via the usb irda and for me it is very much of a hassle.
