The 'Tamagotchi Friends' -

Now, I've had my TF for roughly a week now, and my opinions of it have gone up and down, and for many reasons.

I was in my local Tesco some time last week, and I decided then I wanted a new Tamagotchi. I had just found my love for the old toys and thought it a great way to restart my Tama family by buying the newest model. This Tesco didn't sell them, so off I drove to the nearest superstore - Argos.

Flipping through their hefty catalog, eventually I settled on the page of electronic pets, and right in the corner, tucked away, was the TF. Instantly my heart sunk, but only a little. It warmed my heart that a decade later, this store still sold Tamagotchis, but at the same time I was sad at how much room the pictures didn't take up. It was like they were no longer important.

Drilling in its 7 digit number into a small machine, I was relieved to see they had three in stock, probably of various colours. What shocked me the most? It cost £25.00. That's a whole £13.00 more expensive than they were when I was small. Or more, even!

Needless to say my drive to own one of these things was crazy, so I went ahead and bought one. I wasn't given a choice of colours, and got given the purple gem one. I opened the velcro cover and stared at it as I walked slowly back to my car.

It was ugly.

No, seriously. It was massive, thick, with cheap looking colours. Like someone had coloured it in sharpie.

It was like the guys who came up with the design forgot their original ideas. These little things were made for pockets, and this thing would never fit into a 10 year olds trousers, shirt or coat.

I got home, sat on the sofa with my 14 year old sister, who started talking about Tamagotchi's herself, and how she was 7 when she played with them. (She's four years younger than me)

After opening up the garish looking pet, I took the back off, only to discover it no longer took 3v batteries. I suppose it was a good thing, since they were a pain to get hold of in my area. After putting different batteries in (since it didn't come with any) the thing groggily burst to life, and my heart sunk even more.

I've never heard such horrid sounds in my life. It's like it's little sound chip was being thrown into a blender over and over and then being force to bleat out some notes. If you compare the sounds this thing made to the v5, it makes the v5 sounds like 1000 singing angels and the TF sound like a dying cat. Literally. I always know when the TF needs me because all I can here is the out of tune, tinny sounds from the depths of my bag, which is where I find myself leaving it most of the time.

I don't know if it's just mine that has bad sounds, but it's an earache I'll tell you now. I feel that Bandai had so much possibility, especially with the technology we have these days. They could have made it amazing. There could be so many more features...

Anyway;

Pros:

  • I'm sure it can take a hit
  • Pixel depth
  • New characters
  • There are some new features
  • Revival of original Tamagotchi games (♫ get)
  • Can change contrast

Cons:

  • Poor sound quality
  • Poor paint quality
  • Too big for a normal pocket
  • Too much going on to be able to see Tama (contrast change does not help)
  • Infra-Red is no more, bump connection instead (AKA no backwards compatibility)

Now, just because I've slated so much about this device, that it means it's 100% bad, right?

Well, not exactly.. I mean, mine evolved into a rather strapping looking Mametchi, who calls me to him just to let me know he loves me, and it makes my heart ache to think he's stuck on such a poorly made bit of tech.

Conclusion:

Looks      -_-

Quality    -_-

Content   :)

Overall    :)

 Please don't slate my post/topic too much, I just needed to majorly vent my opinions

on the Tamagotchi Friends.

Okay, thank you for starting a long topic describing in great detail exactly why this version doesn't appeal to you. ^_^ Just relax and take the time to read this useful poem :)

I was very curious of the Tamagotchi Friends mainly because I've heard equal amounts of good and bad about them I don't really fancy any of the european designs but the new ones that were posted in a different topic one of them is pretty cute anyway I used to live in the UK and I go back there to visit my parents and friends quite regularly but they sell them here in Norway too and I wasn't really "shocked" to see that the prices had gone up since when we were younger because the economy has changed as so has everyone's pay I mean bread used to cost 60p back when tamagotchi's were around £10 lol so the fact that you're lucky to buy bread for much under £2 makes £25 not sound horrific... Anyway that's not the point I'm trying to make I'm just rambling now... They are the equivalent of £35 here in Norway and that's what stopped me from buying one but reading your views I feel more like I made the right decision in staying away... I can understand that tamagotchi's aren't as evolved in Europe and USA as they are in Japan because they have lost a lot of customers but with it being so big (possibility to contain more "technology" I suppose) I would have hoped to see a few more features and at least a better contrast to the screen as it's still in black and grey. I've seen some pictures where you can barely make out the pixels and also from some people say they have multiple and the quality of the tamagotchi friends isn't consistent over the ones they own.

That said if you have one and you love it that's great because that's why they are created everyone has their own tastes ^^ and I think I'd still like to try one.. Just not buy one until I have so maybe I need to see if anyone I know has one and borrow it for a bit

But don't YOU have stuff in your signature saying "I hate _______"? Surely it's also acceptable for someone to write a balanced and calm, if negative review?

Thanks for the responses guys.

I know my view on the device is entirely biased, as I am more of an old school Tamagotchi fan than anything,

but that doesn't mean I hate the TF! I mean, it is still a Tamagotchi! I personally am just not used to change...

I mean look at this little guy, he's so happy!

sjAWoiD.jpg

Sorry if I came across a little harsh about it, but as I said, change is something I'm not fond of.

But hey, this is a discussion, right? And I felt the need to discuss the cons (and pros) of the TF

Ya, the print is bad (cheap), the made like plastic (is cheap), the tamagotchi overall uses cheap materials, the tamagotchi paint will wear off, but the features rocks.

I do not have a TF, but I do understand your point.

I think the shape was based around the modern-day color tamas, as for the iD L in japan has a similar figure to the TF (but the colors look nice on mine)

People have called the TF an "upgraded Tama-Go", probably explaining the weird sound since I assume the Tama-Go has a similar sound (correct me if I'm wrong)

But all in all, the TF isn't so bad compared to the Tama-Go, as for it seems more like an upgraded version to it.

... But I can't say anything about the paint quality because I have yet to own one lol

Well, I read your post, and saw your pics. I think my mind is made up:  No TF for yours truly.  I mean, I was not impressed with the Tama Go.

The Tamagotchi Friends does look a lot like a colour tama. I compared the picture of it on your Profile Page to my ID L and it looks so much a like!
Maybe if we're lucky, this is just one step closer to colour screened American/European/Oceanian Tamagotchi.

But don't YOU have stuff in your signature saying "I hate _______"? Surely it's also acceptable for someone to write a balanced and calm, if negative review?

But I don't start forum topics writing several paragraphs on why I hate that stuff

Cons:

  • Poor sound quality
  • Poor paint quality
  • Too big for a normal pocket
  • Too much going on to be able to see Tama (contrast change does not help)
  • Infra-Red is no more, bump connection instead (AKA no backwards compatibility
  • Okay, understandable
  • Uh ok, but the Japanese iDL release is the same way
  • Okay, but the Japanese release TMGC+C is the same size as a Tamagotchi Friends
  • Okay, understandable
  • Bump connection is an improvement. Even if it used infrared I highly doubt it would connect to old versions

I noticed a lot of people have really irrational complaints about the Tamagotchi Friends

If you don't like to read negative reviews, don't click on a topic when the title is evidently a negative review. The person who wrote this review is not "bashing" anything, they're clearly explaining why they dislike it and inviting people to discuss it. That's different to saying "OMG THE FRIENDS SUCKS SO MUCH NOBODY SHOULD PLAY IT".

Please can you talk about the topic at hand instead of arguing amongst each other ... Dazz you could have just ignored the comment that EMF made just as easily as EMF could have ignored the topic just stop now please

Those little photos of memetichi are sweet but doesn't he get clouded by the background items? At least that's what I've seen..

He gets VERY clouded by background items. When the Tama goes idle (don't press any of the buttons for ages) the background actually disappears and you can see him, but the second you press a button his little pixel-room appears.

Was barely able to pick him up on my camera, even with a macro lens o3o"

Does the screen ever go completely off when idle then? or does it always show your tama, because surely that uses a lot of battery lol ^^;

Never goes completely off, just the background that disappears, so it looks like the connexion generation of Tamas.

I kinda wish there was the option to turn backgrounds off and on, hehe.

Guys, don't fight over the review. Dragonboy is entitled to have a negative review of a product just as much as anyone who has a positive review of it. Please respect the fact the person even took the time to give a detailed review, even if negative. If the product didn't meet their needs/requirements, don't try to change their minds. You cannot critique reviews, that's just rude and comes off as bullying the person for expressing their view of something.

Anyway, thanks for the review. TF will be released here in the States shortly and I'm leery of getting one. I mean, I know I'll still get a few for my collection, but I'm not holding my breath on it being that much better, honestly. I kinda look at them being like a TamaGo 2.0. Are the sounds like the TamaGo, or different?

I agree, Im a fan of Connection/Connexion models and this new tamagotchi looks very cheap... i hate Tama-Go and so i hate this bad grey scale screen! In V5/V6 the screen was a little bad too, but not very bad like this! And i hope to see finally a Tamagotchi with WiFi features soon...

Tamagotchi Friends? Gonna pass. Sorry Bandai, I liked all of the Tamagotchis before the TamaGo.
