Haven't you heard about Jibo, the newest robot that interacts with kids, adults, teens, and elderly alike? He recognizes their faces and names and does many things. It is said to come out Holiday 2015. What do you guys think?

As a Scottish person with a broad Glaswegian accent, the first thing I thought was 'oh god, it'll never understand me' XD

Nah, in all seriousness, I'm intrigued. It kinda reminds me of HAL 9000. From what I've seen, it's like a tablet/smartphone/personal assistant wrapped up in ones hands free package. I like the simplistic design. They made the right choice going for an obviously robotic aesthetic - make it too similar to humans and it dips right into uncanny valley territory. I don't think the basic functions of jibo are anything ground breaking tbh (y'know, reminders and facial recognition etc), but the actual package itself is what makes it unique. Social robots are still a kinda alien/futuristic concept to most folk, so I'm interested to see how the overall reception and how people will adapt to it in their home environment.

The whole thing about how it'll change learning and stuff for kids seems a lot like the tablet-sphere to me though. Notice how very few schools have actually adopted ipads into their way of teaching? It's too early and too expensive for jibo to be adopted into the education system. Plus, I don't think humanity's actually ready to include robots in their schools like that yet. Just imagine all the parental complaints you'd get  . Saying all that though, jibo does have the fact that it's a social robot in it's favour, and it'll be interesting to see how the fact that the robot interacts with the kids affects the learning. I heard a couple of studies reckoned that kids do better with social robots than with conventional computers (I'd be inclined to go with that hypothesis myself, but here's a full disclaimer anyway that I've never actually seen this source material and only heard through discussion), so we'll see.

I haven't actually seen the prototype do anything other than introduce itself and dance a bit. Which is cool and all, but nothing new. We're still in very early stages of development though, so I'm keen to keep an eye on it's progress. I'm mostly interested to see if it'll kick start an interest in either social or home robots. On the other hand, I think it's got potential to become a bit of a gimmick - so far it's a smart phone with a personality. And that's pretty awesome robotics, but I don't see the general public being wowed by it's development.

Overall, yeah, I'm interested. But I think it's more a step up from a tablet than 2045 initiative.
