Hello!~

I've really wanted a fancy color Tama ever since I accidentally discovered them a few years ago. I had the original back in '98, and had googled "Tamagotchi," to reminisce.

My question is, which one of the colors is good for people who know very very very little Japanese (I did the first lesson on Rosetta Stone, and have forgotten everything xD) and haven't played with a Tama since they were 8 or nine? I got a Gigapet about 6 or 7 years ago (US version) and was sorely disappointed. I don't want to spend a bunch of money and be disappointed, you know?

I've been looking at the Tamagotchi P's, and they look pretty nifty. I especially like how cutesy they are. Would that be good for a pretty much new person? I found the English patch and D/Led it to my computer just in case.

I find the iD or iDL very easy to use (I can't read Japanese yet either) and very satisfying. If you're willing to go second hand, you should be able to pick up one for $50 or less. :)

The only Japanese tama I've used is the TMGC+C. Even though I don't know any Japanese either, it was easy to use once I got used to the menu locations. I'd use a cheat sheet to refer back to once in a while on specifics I might have forgotten. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the recent Japanese ones though, they seem to be further advanced than the US Tamagotchi Friends for sure! Good luck! :)

Since there are menu translations and guides on sites like TamaTalk and TamaZone, most Japanese tamas are still very easy to use. I have an iD L (japanese version, not english) and I don't know any japanese at all, and I can navigate the menus just fine.

It is not difficult to navigate any Japanese tamagotchi, as many guides are available online. So it really depends what you're looking for in a colour Tamagotchi. Here's a few tips - sorry it's long, but hopefully it's useful.

The TMGC+C and iD are 'simpler' than the iDL & P's; they have fewer characters and fewer unlockable destinations (places your tamagotchi can go and visit), but in having less content will remind you more of older black and white Tamagotchi versions. The TMGC+C is a stand-alone device, while there are downloadable files for the iD which can be sent to the iD through infrared (eg. on some old GSM phones, or through an infrared USB). Both the TMGC+C and iD can be expensive to buy, with new in box selling for $70 - $100+. Of the TMGC+C and iD, I personally prefer the TMGC+C. It doesn't have a bunch of complicated features, I don't have to mess around with infrared, and its content is unique with cute destinations like lotto draws & fortune telling.

The iDL and P's have a lot more content than the TMGC+C and iD. The P's has the most content, both built-in to the device, and also through available downloads as well as 'pierces'. Pierces plug into the top of the P's, and have various themes e.g. Sanrio & Disney, and add extra items, games and characters to the P's. Pierces are a great feature but become expensive, as each pierce is usually $15 - $25 these days. Luckily, the P's has a lot of built-in stuff so is incredibly enjoyable even without pierces; pierces just add an extra something for when you've run your P's for ages and need a change of scenery!

If you're after something with a lot of content, the P's is a great idea, and I would recommend it over the iDL. The English patch for the P's, as you've mentioned, is a very useful resource and makes the experience a lot more straightforward. Note that the patches do not yet translate the entire device; I believe there is still a bit of dialogue between characters that hasn't been translated, but this does not detract from the experience at all. The P's is great fun, with cute features like daycare from 9 - 3 (good for busy people!) and part-time jobs, and is easy to operate with the patches.

The latest Japanese colour release is the 4U. I do not recommend the 4U, as there are no english patches yet, and is more complex than the P's. There is also less content built-in than the P's. Also wanted to add that if you're ok with buying used Tamagotchis, each of these versions will be similar in price, with the TMGC+C generally being the most expensive. The iDL & Ps will be cheapest new, with deals around $50 on Amazon.

Thank you all for responding. I've spent the last few days on here reading up on the different Tamas, and only just made an account last night and this topic today. I'm pretty sure I want to get a P's especially since I've found a couple for less than $40 with free shipping, and because the pierces look so freaking cool.

I kinda want a 4U, but I feel like I should start with one that has an English patch... If I can get an irda usb and it to work at least. Does anyone have suggestions for those sort of usbs? I don't think my phone would work for it (it's a Samsung Galaxy Victory).

I've been sharing my current Tama obsession with my friend and sister and they're both kinda wanting one now, too (even though my sister thinks I'm too old and wouldn't play with it if I got it xD).

Sorry this post is kinda scattered, I'm kinda tired right now...

Hi! I would recommend the iD L as a first color Tamagotchi. It was my first color Tamagotchi, and I got the hang of it without even looking at online guides. :)

As for the P's, however, it was my third color Tamagotchi and yet I was utterly confused when I first got it, and I actually knew some Japanese... :p

You can get English iD Ls but they're quite expensive and they have a few glitches.

My P's was my first color tamagotchi and I am absolutely in love with it. I actually cast aside my 4u even though I had my P's way longer. I love the pierces that can add in more content (and they are so CUTE). I really like the 4u though, but the app doesn't work with the phones I have, which was one the major downside for me.

Congratulations! I always wanted a color tamagotchi. But if you want to know, the English patch will only work if your phone does infrared.
