Halloween in Tamatown

-------------------------------

Giant spiders covered front yards, tree branches swayed in the wind, and the low but full moon casted an eerie glow among the streets of Tamatown. It was, no doubt, Halloween! Young or old, boy or girl, everybody enjoyed this spooky time of year.

Everybody, that is, except a young spirit, or Dorotchi, named Leo. He sat alone on top of his gravestone, thinking sadly, "Oh why won't anybody come into the cemertary?"

Now, you're probably thinking Halloween is when ghosts run free and do whatever they please. That's not true in Leo's case. He was always so timid that he never dared to step a foot out of his cemetery. He wanted so desperately for someone to open the heavy iron gate, come in, and be his friend. But no one ever did.

Whenever someon passed it, they would shudder and say, "I'm never going in there! It's haunted."

Leo was thinking about his unfortunate luck when he heard the sound of faint barking in the distance. He floated over the cemetery wall so he could see over it. Suddenly, he saw a Hinatchi frantically running down the street, being chased by three large Tama Pets. They all had leashes and spiky collars on them.

"AHHH!" he screamed. "This is the last time I'm walking Sarah's Bagubagutchis!"

He came to a halt in front of the cemetery. He shook his head in dispair and quickly pushed open the heavy iron gates. Ignoring the ominous screech they let out, he ran inside, closing them behind him.

On the other side, he saw the little Bagubagutchis clawing and jumping at the gates, trying to get inside.

The Hinatchi, named Buddy, sunk down on the dewy grass and sighed a sigh of relief. "Phew," he said aloud, "that was close." He looked back at the Bagubagutchis. "Great. Now I can't leave until Sarah comes to get them." He got up and walked around. "I'm sure she'll be here soon."

Then, he accidentally tripped over a tree root. He went flying through the air and landed face-down. "Ugh," he groaned, "how could this get any worse?" He rubbed his head, looked up and found a gravestone staring back at him. He gasped and backed away.

Two little translucent paws peeked out from behind it. Then came a head. And finally, a whole ghostly body was on display.

Buddy gasped again. "It's a--"

"Hi," peeped Leo.

Buddy shot up and screamed like a little girl.

"Please," said Leo quietly, "don't be afraid. It's so lonely here. Won't you stay?"

"Then you'll ask me to stay forever."

"No I won't. I promise."

Buddy looked at him skeptically. "I wonder if I fell harder than I thought," he muttered.

"Oh no, I'm quite real. Please, won't you be my friend?"

He raised an eyebrow and said, "Fine. There's not much else I can do." He scooted next to him. "By the way, I'm Buddy."

"I'm Leo."

"Nice to meet you."

"You, too."

They didn't get to talk long before a Young Mametchi approached the cemetery. "My Bagubagutchis! What are you barking at?" She picked them up and they instantly calmed down. She cracked the gate and tipped her head inside. "Hello?"

"Hi!" Leo exclaimed.

Sarah, the name of the Young Mamentchi, jumped. She turned pale and looked like as if she just seen a ghost. Which, technically, she had.

Buddy rushed over. "Sarah! Are you okay?"

She put her hands on her cheeks and let out an ear-piercing scream. "GHOST!!!"

Buddy quickly cupped his hand over her mouth. "Shh! Do you want to wake up the whole neighbor?"

She stopped screaming and looked at him. "It's Halloween. The whole neighborhood IS awake."

"You know what I mean." He paused. "Don't worry, Leo won't harm you."

"Leo?" she asked.

"Yeah, Leo. That's his name."

Sarah cautiously bent down to inspect the small spirit. "Um, hi."

"Hi. Sorry I scared you."

"Oh, it's okay." She smiled and looked around. "Hey, where are your ghost friends?"

"I don't have any."

Her eyes widened. "Youre all alone in this graveyard?"

He nodded.

"Wow." She thought for a minute. "Well, why don't you come along to go trick-or-treating with us?"

"Umm..." He looked at Buddy.

"That's a great idea!" Buddy said.

Leo smiled. "Thanks."

And so, the three of them head out onto the street, knocking on each door they passed, with Leo getting extra treats because of his "life-like costume."
