Goodafternoon! I would like to know the difference between ID or ID L, 4U & P. (confused here) I'm new to the Tamagotchi scene and I will gift it. Before buying, I wanna know the differences. Thank you guys! *bows*

There's a lot of differences in these versions. I suggest you take a look at the Tamagotchi Wikia to find out more about them. I will be giving a overview for each so you could at least see the differences. All of them are in color and the Tamagotchis are customizable in some way.

iD:

The ID is the simplest of the four, having fewer characters(11 adults) and features. It allows downloads from Infrared devices. These downloads maybe clothes, toys, accessories, items, wallpapers, games, and more. There are special versions for this version such as the rare Conan ID and the Tamagotchi Lovely Melody version.

iD L:

The ID L is the only colored Tamagotchi known to have an English release(known as the Tamagotchi iDL-E). It retains some of the features that the iD has. It can download items (and all the things said above) through an Infrared device. This version allows the player's Tamagotchi to have a pet. The growth chart is bigger, having more teens and adults(32 adults). Planting is also featured in this version. Henshin Jo also makes it debut appearance here where certain characters transform into a different form when this place is visited. There are other sub-versions for this version such as the Tamagotchi iDL Princess Spacy version (where only three characters and the games where replaced) and the Tamagotchi iDL 15th Anniversary. The Tamagotchi iDL 15th Anniversary is very different from the regular iDL, having a entirely new growth chart and destinations.

P's:

The P's is different from the two previous installations because of it's Pierce feature. Pierces are small changeable pins that can be placed on a Tamagotchi P's to unlock new characters or character transformations, games, and destinations. There are 17 Pierces that were released. Even with the Pierce feature, the Tamagotchi P's still allows downloads from Infrared devices. There are 32 built-in adults, still, but most are entirely new. The planting system from the iDL was removed but the pet system still remains but with fewer pets to choose from. 4-way connections are now allowed. Other features include sending your Tamagotchi to school or sending them to their jobs, teens and toddlers maybe painted, personalities affect the Tamagotchi's growth.

4U:

The 4U is a bit different from the iDL and P's. It is simpler, having only 10 built-in characters and fewer destinations. Each built-in character gets a Personality Stage. It's like a Henshin Jo transformation, but it's unlocked when certain requirements are met. This is the first colored Tamagotchi to not use Infrared. Rather, it uses NFC(Near Field Communication). This version still accepts downloads but not from an Infrared device. There is a Tamagotchi 4U app available on the Play Store and the App Store where in NFC-compatible devices (phones or tablets) may send items (clothes, foods, characters, wallpapers, etc.) to the Tamagotchi 4U. This version features Touch Cards as well where they function like Pierces from the P's. They unlock new stuff when the Card is bumped to the 4U. This is also the first version to allow downloadable characters. The 4U only connects with certain tablets and phones, the most known being the Nexus 7 Tablet.

The iD can connect to the iDLs and iDs but not to the P's. The iDL can connect to the iDLs, P's and the iD. The P's can connect to the iDL and P's only. The 4U only allows connections to 4Us as well. I hoped I helped you see the differences in each version and good luck choosing one! Each version is great! You can't go wrong! :D If you need more help, you can always PM me :D

the ID is the first color version to introduce downloads, it has fewer overall content and characters compared to all the other versions, however its animations are a lot better than any of the releases that came after it, making it feel more personal, specially if you like the characters in it.

It is also the Tamagotchi with the most downloadable content, aside from the P's conversions, so it's really fun and doesn't get boring easily with all the expansions. (All of them free)

the iD L is basically an improved version of the iD, it fixes all the iD drawbacks, however,it introduced a new animation system so characters could wear clothes, making the characters have less sprites and making the animations less fluid.

But apart from that is has a lot of content, most of it which is built in, and still keeps being simple, definitely the best version for a beginner

The iD L also has 2 special versions that are a bit more expensive but definetly worth it, those being the 15th anniversary version and the Princess Spacy one (Warning, really girly!)

the P's is the version that came after the iD L, being the version with most features yet in any Tamagotchi, the P's allows you to take your character to School, Daycare Painting, Jobs, find people on the garden, date in the park, personality skills and user profile.

Other than that, the P's can also have downloads, and since all downloads from previous versions have been converted for the P's, this version has the most overall downloadable content.

The P's also introduced pierces, that are little expansion packs that will let you get even more characters, transformations, items, games and destinations.

It also has faceplates like the Tama-Go, but sadly the jewel-like pattern can't be removed xD

the 4U has the fewest built in characters out of all of them, having only 10 adults and skipping completely the teen stages, it also has less features than the P's so is around the same as the iD L. It also has some new features such as training skills and nanny care, as well as having clearer faceplates. It can have a lot more content with downloads, but you need a Nexus 7 (as its the cheapest) tablet to get them, making it really expensive.

I don't recomend this version for beginners at all xD

If you are planning on getting one of those I think the iD L is your best bet, it is simple and has a lot of content and the characters are most of them adorable. If you really enjoy your iD L then you can go for the more complex P's after, the iD L gameplay lasts about 5 motnhs, so you have time enough to enjoy it :D

The iD L has an official english version too, if you don't mind paying 3 times more for it, the P's has a english patch that's free, so those 2 are also the ones you can enjoy in english too.

Sorry to hijack - I've done a bit of forum surfing and i can't see the answer...

Can either of the iDL, Ps or 4U connect to the "friends" version?

thanks

I'm sure iDL and Ps can NOT, because Friends works with NFC connection, while iDL and Ps with InfraRed. 4u has NFC like Friends, but since they're very different (4u is just for japan, Friends is just for the rest of the world) I think they can't connect. I'm not completely sure about 4u though :)

I thought this as well, but wanted a second opinion ;) i'll start not derail this thread ... to a new thread I say!

Hello I don't speak or read Japanese so I feel like the only one that would work for me would be the Tamagotchi IDL English version is that correct that's the only English version that's out? I was so excited to find out that Tamagotchis were still around and they had New ones I just was a little disappointed that I couldn't buy the ones that are in Japanese. They look really fun but I'm really interested in buying more than one I just need some information about them and which ones are the best ones to buy

So you said the Tamagotchi P's has free patches to download to get the English menu .. how do you go about doing that where do downloaded from what side I'm a beginner and I don't know where to start or what to do because I really want to Tamagotchi but I honestly don't have money to spend on an English version can you please help me

Search mr.blinky and you'll find the tamagotchi P's english patches, you'll need a compatible phone with irda or an infa red dongle. Tbh you don't really need to know japanese to use the japanese tamas, the menus are easy to work out and there is lots of info out there about what they're saying
