I'm thinking about getting one from amazon, even though I won't be able to read anything at all in the menus. That's really the only thing that's kept me from immediately going for it. On one hand, I know Tamagotchi are somewhat simple and probably wouldn't require much reading at all, but on the other, I've seen the translation guide on tamatalk and there actually DOES seem to be quite a bit of text.

I really want a color version that doesn't cost extreme amounts of money. I've seen some listings on Amazon that range between 30-50 dollars, and I'm willing to go for the lower-end ones, but the language barrier seems like it would be just enough to keep me from effectively caring for my Tamagotchi, at least at first. (Unless I can download that .pdf to my phone so I can take it with me. Hm...)

I haven't played since the '90's, and while I've been playing with Tamagotchi CD-ROM and the Tamagotchi Simulator, I'm not sure exactly how different the Japanese Tamagotchi are from English.

I don't think my phone is compatible with the 4u app thing.

So would you recommend buying a 4u, knowing these things?

The 4U is actually simpler than the previous versions but zero knowledge of Japanese while you can play with it, you really wouldn't be able to appreciate its feature or make the most out of it.

You can however learn from watching people on YouTube but it will take a lot of time though you will eventually at some point settle in.

After finally getting my Tamagotchi Friends in the mail I realize that I don't really know what I'm doing much with it either. Mostly though, it's only because the shell's shadow is overlapping the icons so I'm just kind of blindly selecting icons until I get the one I need. (Well, I'm starting to memorize them now, lol.)

I realize this should have been posted in the questions section, but it was "On my mind" at the time, so...

I did watch an unboxing video and saw how to set it up. The rest is probably just memorizing which option to select under each icon and looking at guides constantly until I do so.

Nah, just buy it. This guide should help you with anything you need to know.
That's for the 4u+. Is there any difference in the menus between them? I'm looking to get a normal 4u.

Thanks for the replies!

No, I don't think there's any difference in the two other than the games and the babies and toddlers. Well, and the personality stages. Some are 4U+ only.
