You always start off at generation 1. One your tama breeds with another tama, either by the matchmaker or by another tamagotchi, you will have a baby, when the parent leaves and you are left with baby, take another look at its stats and you will see it says 2G. You will have bred the second generation. That can continue undefinately but will start from the beginning again if your tama dies.
