So there's this icon at the bottom right hand corner that shows up every now and then... and i don't know how to get to it or what it means...

That means your tama needs something. You should feed him/her a snack and play a game if it looks normal.If it is in bed,turn the light off,if it is sick give it medicine, and dicipline orm praise it if it has a squigle over it's head.When it has the squigle it may all so be hungry or not happy.Hope I could help!
if it is very hungry and unhappy, needs praise(when it has its back to you or crying), a time out(when the icon is on for no reason or after it gave a present and starts making a weird face), or when it is going to bed, that is what it is for to warn you.
