The next morning, Monica woke up early, grabbed a bagel from the table, and set off for school. She and Kristalle would meet on the way.
As she came up to the curb, she yeled at Kristalle, "Hi!"
Kristalle ignored her.
She tried again."Kristalle! Hi"
Kristalle still didn't listen.
Monica ran up to her and touched her shoulder.
Kristalle then turned around, surprised. "Oh! I didn't see you there!"
"But surely you heard me." questioned Monica.
"No, no. I am deaf."
Monica suddenly understood.
"You can read lips?"
"Yes. I only lost my hearing two years ago. Even before then I could read lips because I would often daydream. Chloe and the rest are teasing me because of it."
Monica thought a moment.
"Kristalle, we have to do something."
Kristalle's face spread into a wide grin.
"I know..."
