The door was closed, but Sean opened it and tried to crawl down. He tripped on the first step.
Mike heard the sickening crunch and followed the sound. He saw the basement door open and fought to keep down a rising wave of terror. Then he saw Sean's frail body at the base of the stairs.
"No." he breathed. He then proceeded to race downstairs and feel Sean's skull. It felt like it was in a million pieces. he took his pulse.
"NO!" he yelled when he couldn't feel it. He immediatly called 9-1-1.
The ambulance replied to his call. They took Sean into the ambulance for a minute, then came back with solemn looks on their faces.
"We're so sorry." said a young Memetchi. "There's nothing we can do."
Mike was so shattered he couldn't even cry. What he did do was call the funeral home, still in a state of shock.
But the tears would come soon enough...
