Ok here are some tips I've gathered from many members, so I don't take full credit for these.
1. When you tamagotchi is asleep and the lights are out, press 'B' to set it to the clock screen. It uses less pixels and shouldn't run your battery out.
2. Turn off your sound when you use your tamagotchi. Turn it back on when you go away so you hear it beep.
3. If you tamagotchi is very black (such as the megatchi), when you aren't using your tamagotchi, set it to the clock screen.
