I know that after I reset you can chose reset or download. Can you dowload after the battery dies? I hope we can!

Yes i just had to do this 5 minutes ago, after you put the new battery in it will say download or reset, push download and you all back to normal, so the awnser is yes,

Is there a time limit on how long you can leave it with out batteries, will you still be able to download two years later?

Yep, take as long as you want, it's like a memory card for video games, it's saved, unless you purposley over right it it will be there for ever,

Yes, according to the instruction manuel, it apparently saves whenever there is a big event or something happens like waking up, growing up, or IR communication.
