In 1997 I begged my parents to buy me a tamagotchi until they caved. I got one..though I don't believe it to be a Bandai product. I was hoping that someone might be able to help me identify exactly what it was.

It was bought for $30 as a specialty electronics store (none of this $5 - $10 homebrand stuff) and basically looked liked the regular white egg shell with yellow buttons. The jagged trim around the screen was printed on and was red. The background was a some random design of pink, blue and yellow.

I can't remember much about the packaging that it came in but it didn't tell you what characters you were likely to get or how many options there were or anything like that.

It seemed to be based on pre-existing species. Before it broke, I got a stegasaurus, T-rex, rhino and snake. It evolved based on what it was going to be when it finally became an adult (rather than the random characters of development that you see in Bandai tamas).

The tama had the following components (not necessarily in the right order):

1. Stats - Your tamas age, weight, happiness and hunger. (You couldn't name it).

2. Food - If I remember rightly you could feed it either fruit (strawberry), meat or bottled water and it would eat until it refused to eat anymore.

3. Game - The games was such that you had to guess if he/she was going to finish looking right or left. If you got it wrong the first time then you would lose the game overall. If you got it righ the first time then you would win. I think it was best of five. Playing games did not affect your tamas weight.

4. Medicine - The icon looked like a needle and you always had to jab them twice.

5. Weather - When it snowed you could give a scarf, when the sun came out it got a hat and when it rained you could give an umbrella.

6. Toilet - Unlike Bandai tamas where a wave washes across the screen, this tama would be characterised by an actual broom sweeping across the screen.

7. Discipline - As a baby and toddler the character would cry and as a teen and older it would get stormy... this is when it would get a smack.

8. Light - To be turned off when your tama went to bed.

Other details that I remember:

* There was no set bed or waking up time. It was completely random and never exactly on the hour.

* The baby form would sleep on the screen. The toddler would sleep in a little bath tub and the adult would sleep in a bed.

* When your character died (they would last around 13 days), you would see an angel with wings and a halo on the screen.

* As an adult, you could leave the tama at home for 8 or 9 hours while at home and it would have done four poos (one on top of each other on the screen) and be sick three times and still survive without shortening of life span.

* The sun that used to appear for weather and when the tama was happy was a little more detailed than the one we have now. It had four straight lines emitted at diagonals and then four smaller dots in between each of those lines.

* As far as I remember a baby was a baby until the next day when it would evolve into a toddler.

If I remember anything else I will throw it in later. :p This would still have to my favourite tamagotchi of all time and was quite well sofisticated for its time. When the buttons broke I went to buy another but they didn't stock them anymore. I kept it for a long time.. should have held on to it a bit longer. Oh well. :(

Over to you guys... an ideas??

Hmm...that's a hard one. I was pretty little during the virtual pet craze 10 years ago, so I'm not sure. :(

Mabye you should go to tamenagerie.com! That website has lots of pictures of older copy-cat virtual pets.

Its was the first Tamagotchi i ever had that you have just described. Mine was originally brown all over and so was the inside background. Spikes facing inwards around the screen too.

When you started a new egg, the screen would show a picture of a volcano (presuming it was errupting) and then on to a bouncing egg like in most other Tamagotchi's you get.

That's all i can say as i havent seen it around my house for several years. What i can say and remember quite well is how my dad dropped my Tamagotchi in his tea. I used to make him look after it during school hours until i got home and it still amazes me on how he managed to do that. Still works although the background is a little defaced in one corner. The only evolution stage i remember is the Terradactyl i once had.

I'm going to look for it around the house and see if i come across it to scan the image.

no, thats not a dinkie dino, bcos Dinkie Dino doesnt have a shape of an egg

I recognized your description based on one of my VP, its called T-Rex, I forgot the second word...

mine was green with red buttons :gozarutchi:

Im not really sure about it though, you can always check tamenagerie "odd pets" section, Mothra probably have one ^^

I looked throughout tamenagerie's website and to my suprise they don't seem to have the one i had. I am amazed at the amount of Tamagotchi's that person has and the amount of Dino ones but no luck.

Oh lastly, this is what my Dino Tamagotchi looked like to see if anyone reckonizes it:

Key features:

.Birth is an errupting volcano rather than a egg. I definately think it isn't a egg (just remembered) so it might not be the thread makers Tamagotchi.

.The Tamagotchi itself has a bumpy egg effect like in the MSPaint image shown (near exact picture of the Tami).

I'M DESPERATE TO FIND IT OR INFACT BUY ANOTHER ONE AGAIN>

Hi Prey,

Thanks for your reply! :furawatchi:

Unfortunately, I don't believe that it is the same one. The one that I had definately did start from an egg. *strains* I believe it was a little black egg... could be wrong though.

Like you though, it would have been the best tamagotchi that I've ever owned and I would love to have another one!

I had a look on tamanagerie.com but was only able to find it. I did however, find the dodgy gyaoppi pet (20 in 1) that I bought a bit later for kicks because you could select what pet you wanted. It was nowhere near as good... but it was a Crazy Clarks job! B)

Yeah. Best Tamagotchi ever. Thats why i joined just to reply to your thread. :mimitchi:

I don't really play with Tamagotchi's anymore but i am reluctant to start again for some reason. These are the only ones i can seem to find:

Most have worn from hands over the years and the junk its been hiding under.

Nano KITTY - One of the most enjoyable.

Nano BABY - Never worked from the beginning

Bear - Never worked from the beginning (Sister's)

Digimon - One of the finest i had. Still very mint as it was in a different location that the other Tamagotchi's but needs a bit of a clean.

GIGA Pet cat - My sister's and i didn't like them for their fatality rate was high.

Giga Pets Dalmation - Can't believe i swapped my watch and 50p for it when i was a kid.

The reason some of them didn't work is because i believe i didn't follow the instructions of resetting them after pulling the plastic tag or something. I never had an original but that Dino one is the ultimate and i won't stop finding another one.

To be honest, after having that one from '97, I was a quite disappointed when I came home and unpacked the V1 when it first came out.

I have to query why the good ones just disappeared... You'd think something of such good quality would have lasted the test of time! I don't know what your dino one cost, but the one I bought was $30 and that was a significant amount at the time.. especially considering the current Bandai tamas are only $25 despite the value of most other items going up. Perhaps that had something to do with it?

I've given up searching for another one but I thought I would post it here in case anyone else happened to have one as well and remembers/knows what it is.
