Tamagotchis need 2032 batteries (they are like watch batteries, about the size of a quarter and round if you didn't know ^_^ ) and you can buy them at pretty much any store, like Wal-mart, Target, etc. They cost about $2.50 per battery.

I would restart the Tamagotchi if I were you. Sometimes, when I press "download" after changing the batteries, my items are messed up as well. But, I've never had something happen like you :-P. I don't think not resetting will wreck anything, but I don't recommend keeping your Tama this way.
