You probably got a male. Normally, if they don't tell you what gender a beta fish is, it's a male. The females don't look as pretty so the people who sell fish will put a sign by them.

Females will be thinner then males and generally look less handsome in a fishy way.

That isn't entirely true, If you put a piece of white paper behind the fish tank the beta fish can get lighter, girl or boy.
I've never tried that o.o'

I moreso meant that they were more a white color than any color at all.

The female betta is always smaller and way less finny.

The males have long fins and are usually brighter colored.

They are very easy to tell apart. ;)

Males are prettier than females. Males have more vibrant colors and females have darker colors.

I have three bettas; two male and one female.

Males have big, long, beautiful fin and awsome colors. Females are tiny with small fins and don't look as pretty.

You probably bought a male. ;)
