Wiz & Bandai (both are Japanese companies) together invented the Tamagotchi. Then they sent the circuit diagram and blueprints to a contracted factory in China to be manufactured. This is fairly standard business practice. It's much cheaper to have goods manufactured in China, than in USA or Japan. Many companies do it this way. For example, when you buy an Apple (USA company) iPod, somewhere on the package it says designed in USA, made in China.
So like others have said, they are produced in China for distribution, the person who invented Tamagotchi was a woman in Japan named Aki Maita.
