P's and iD L not connecting

My cousin got the P's Melody Land set and we were trying to connect it with my iD L, but nothing we tried seemed to work. All the guides I read said to choose iD L on both systems, and press the first option. We tried this, and the connection timed out with every attempt. What are we doing wrong??

 
When you've selected that first option on each and the heart screens are showing, are you pressing the 'B' button on one of the tama's to make the connection?

OOOOOH. We thought as soon as the picture came up, that meant it was trying to connect. Oops! Hahaha :D
