I've looked at translated guides (I don't speak/read Japanese) and I've got the hang of things for the most part, but I can't for the life of me figure this game out. It seems to be sheer dumb luck for me if I press the button at the right time or not. Any advice? Is there some trick to it I haven't figured out?

 
You should wait until the star almost hit the floor, a yellow japanese word at the bottom of the screen will appear. 

Then press either A or B depends on what direction your tama is facing, and make sure you’re quick!

A is when your tama facing left and B button is when facing right. 

In case if you’re wondering what C does, it will cancel the game and you will be taken to the previous menu. And of course you will not get any gotchi points.

I also had no idea how to play this when I first got my Mix... They really didn't do a good job of telling the player what to do
