The Family Album of a Weird Little Ninja and a Very Fluffy Rabbit - Penguin-keeper's Virtual Pet Log

Recommended Posts

I haven't had very much time for Bobbo this week, due in part to taking some time to properly organise my Game Boy games in a binder (trading-card pages that fit Pokemon cards are perfect for this!), which took up a chunk of free time.

Still, I finally managed to spend some time with the little guy earlier, and it was an uneventful in-game day today - Bobbo lost a race, and his meters continue to deplete more quickly, and he's pooping more often, right alongside this. There are no pictures this time, accordingly. :P

Speaking of Pokemon cards, my siblings gave me a whole treasure trove of Pokemon cards.

I've got something a little bit different for you guys today, and I'm almost certain that this is a virtual pet that has never been covered on TamaTalk before! :D

99cTZ7D.jpg

Y93cEGG.jpg
First things first, this is a Psion Series 5mx - a British palmtop computer which is about the same size as a Nintendo 3DS XL. The Psion Series 5 was released in 1997, and the 5mx (a much-upgraded version) was released in 1999, so the device was contemporaneous with the Western release of the original Tamagotchi Gen 1 and Gen 2 devices, and the ensuing virtual pet craze.

revd3uq.jpg
While browsing for Series 5 software and utilities recently, I happened across a program called "Fred", which was billed as a "virtual pet novelty" for the system. So, tonight, I installed Fred to see what it was all about, with the intent of adding my findings to my log.

XQ01iti.jpg
Upon starting the program, I was greeted with this. It turns out that Fred is a virtual version of a Pet Rock.

Ns9v37v.jpg

ELXkha6.jpg

ClYHVlm.jpg

KgyEiio.jpg
It also turns out that there are various witticisms attached to the "activities" that you can perform so as to "care for" Fred. Moreover, they're not always the same every time - for example, choosing the Inject option for the first time will inform you that the needle broke, and choosing it a second time will tell you that the needle is still bent from the previous attempt, and there are multiple quips for attempting to give Fred a drink of Coca-Cola.

I went in expecting a basic virtual pet program rather than a joke one, and I found myself very amused indeed - Fred gave me a good laugh. The help files charmingly mention that Fred is free and is "Smileware", so if you like it, smile. I did indeed smile. :)

If anyone else around here owns a Psion Series 5 and is interested in checking out one of the only pieces of virtual pet software for the device (I know of one other, Magic Egg/"MEgg", but it was shareware and the full version probably isn't available anymore), you can download Fred here.

Today, Bobbo finally won another race, which was the biggest event of his otherwise uneventful in-game day. :P

nP4mRic.jpg
Meanwhile, now that Bobbo is reaching old age, I decided to hatch another Game Boy Tamagotchi, and I'm going to try out the method for obtaining Mimitchi that's outlined here. Supposedly, picking the black egg and feeding the Tamagotchi nothing but carrots for six in-game days will result in Mimitchi. We shall see! :mimitchi:

LBZgcjD.jpg
Living in the room next door, we now have Bimmy! He isn't very fond of carrots, but unfortunately for him they're all that he'll be getting for the next six days...

It turns out that the different rooms have different wallpaper, different music, and even a differently-placed window so that you can tell which room it is at a glance. I think that this is a really nice touch. :)

After having evolved into a Marutchi in between the last log entry and this one, Bimmy grew into a Tamatchi today. Tamatchi always amuses me because it looks like a badly-drawn Kirby. Tamagotchi GB's sports game only accentuates this further, with the character hopping between ledges in a hilariously-wonky-looking fashion.

sR7B7nf.jpg
Unfortunately, a little while later, Bobbo passed on. I'll actually miss him (in as much as one can miss a fictional virtual alien creature from a simulation game), since my fondness for the Game Boy line means that I feel more of an attachment to this game and its creatures than I typically do with the dedicated virtual pet devices. Goodbye, Bobbo - it was a fun time. :)

I65Y01h.jpg
A nice touch is that Tamagotchi GB has a built-in memorial feature as part of its save-file, with spaces to save data about eight favourite Tamagotchis that you've raised.

wnaJcQN.jpg
If you have a Tamagotchi in another room when the one in the first room passes on and you resume the game after the memorial screen without choosing to hatch another egg, you'll see that the first room is now empty. Though the same jolly music as before plays, it seems sad since now your Tamagotchi is no longer there with it. This game's emotional beats are very well-thought-out, I think.

Meanwhile, Bimmy went on with his life, blissfully unaware of what had just transpired next door.

42lK0uu.jpg
Given what I noted above about Tamatchi looking like a badly-drawn Kirby, this picture entertains me more than it should.

At one point, I briefly forgot the carrots-only rule that supposedly yields Mimitchi, and ended up feeding Bimmy a cake - hopefully that won't have a negative effect on the end-goal! :o

IczIBPV.jpg
Soon enough, the in-game night fell, and it was time for Bimmy to get some sleep - isn't he cute? :D

Whilst it was fun raising two Tamagotchis at once for a while, I don't think that I'll do so again anytime soon, if ever, and I certainly don't plan to raise three at a time, either - it's just a bit too hectic for my liking, and I prefer the game's more chill nature when you're raising just one pet at a time. So, for now, it'll just be Bimmy, until his time is up.

While I'm here, I just want to draw everybody's attention to @LucidLyes thread, "How to make Tamagotchi for Game Boy more like a real Tamagotchi", as it's a great effort at bringing more community attention to the game by providing a ruleset for playing it that puts it more in line with the dedicated virtual pet devices that run in real-time. If you're at all interested in Tamagotchi GB, I highly recommend checking it out! :D

This log is so detailed, I love your recent coverage on the GB game!

Speaking of which, I've been meaning to purchase the cartridge (my Gameboy collection is tiny, with two original GB games and one GBA game, plus my SP!), but the cheapest listings I can find are listed as Nintendo of Europe copies, with the information on the sides of the sticker being printed in German/Italian. It makes me wonder if the ROM itself is in English, and if you possibly know anything about the game's different region releases? (the only ROMs available online are the US/NTSC versions, from what I've researched, so I can't test using an emulator :().

Also, I never truly did notice how Kirby-like Tamatchi was in the Gameboy ver! I've always enjoyed the aesthetic of it anyway, so this just makes it even better.

I'm impressed at how good the keyboard is on the PSION 5, I think I've only ever seen tiny blackberry-style buttons on those types of devices, and I'm loving the 1990s era programmer humour in Fred.

Hey there! thanks for the shout out!
I'm not posting about it but I'm actually having way too much fun with the GB game. It's definitely getting the job of replacing a real Tamagotchi done. What it lacks in "realism" it replaces with better graphics and more interesting gameplay.
Besides, I've also gotten Tamagotchi 3 to run on an Android emulator. The RTC isn't actually functioning but I can definitely play it the same way as I'm playing the other 2 games, and this one has a whopping 49 characters, so that's sure to keep me interested for a while!

I'm currently raising 5 Tamagotchis (classic android app, Tamagotchi GB, Mori and Umi on Tamagotchi 2, and Osu/Mesutchi on Tamagotchi 3 since today). As you said, things are getting a little bit hectic and I think I'm gonna focus on just 1 at a time after they all die off (or go back to their planet if you prefer).

BTW, is "Bimmy" a reference to AVGN's Bimmy and Jimmy joke in the Double Dragon review?

Sort of! I've never watched the Angry Video Game Nerd, so it's just a reference to the "Bimmy and Jimmy" typo from Double Dragon 3 on the NES.

Not sure I understand the question. I don't have 3 tamagotchis on the same "cartridge" if that's what you mean. I only have both Mori and Umi tamagotchis on the Tamagotchi 2 "cartridge". (I'm using quotes cause I only use ROMs).

I'm sorry, I should have been clearer! What I mean is, are you running multiple separate emulated games at once, at the same time (i.e., in separate windows/tabs/whatever), with a Tamagotchi or two on each? :)

Oh I get it. I don't use my PC all that often these days (and I've been doing 90% of my gaming on smartphone ever since I got powerful enough devices) so I'm using My OldBoy! for the first 2 games (Tamagotchi and Tamagotchi 2) and RetroArch with the mGBA core for Tamagotchi 3. I "visit" each tamagotchi sequentially and take care of it every 1 or 2 hours. That process is currently taking about 15-20 minutes every hour (my job has been pretty chill since COVID hit the scene), but I think I'd enjoy each game a lot more if I focused on only 1 pet at a time. That's why I'm sort of impatient for all of them* to die return to their home planet and keep only one to enjoy**. I'm a horrible person.

*EDIT: The Umi character just died right after laying an egg. I coldly sent it back to its home planet as soon as it hatched. One less, 3 to go x).

**That's when I'm planning to start my log too.

Bimmy is hanging out on the GB Boy Colour today.

He's now 4, which means that he only has to endure two more in-game days of being forced to eat nothing but carrots - hopefully he'll still evolve into a Mimitchi in spite of my mistake of feeding him a cake last time! :o

GRMmm8Z.jpg
Bimmy's frustrated angry face when he loses at the smile game is hilarious. Bootleg Kirby look intensifies!

I tried to enter him in a beauty-contest today, and to my surprise, he was allowed to enter. I had mistakenly thought that only adult Tamagotchis could enter the contests, but that's not so - this gives me more to do with the game when they're in the child phase, now. :)

QPouf6W.jpg
Even better, Bimmy won! :D

1rCkc5q.jpg
And, after giving him a top-up feed and playing all three of the games for a little while, every single one of his meters were full. :)

Eh, if you don't have the time, you don't have the time - this is a hobby, after all, and it's meant to be fun, not a chore. :)

I was already spending a bunch of time with my Game Boy Colour this evening (the custom one, as opposed to the clone, this time), so I felt like playing through two in-game days for Bimmy, today.

AKTWG6I.jpg
On the first of them, which for him was his fifth in-game day, he won a race. :D

And then, on Bimmy's sixth in-game day, the moment of truth arrived - he evolved! And he evolved into...

PYFuXzp.jpg
... A Zuccitchi! :o Was the Mimitchi method incorrect, or did the one cake that I gave him in error foul everything up? I don't know. :P

I'm fine with it since I like Zuccitchi, but I'm a little puzzled by this, I must admit - barring the lone cake, I gave Bimmy perfect care throughout, always kept his weight at its lowest-possible level, always kept his stress at 0, never let the Hungry or Happy hearts drop below one empty, and caught and acted on all of his discipline calls*. Also, he evolved with all of his meters full.

*@LucidLyes - Thanks for contacting me and letting me know what to do with the random sad-face calls that are different to refusals to eat/play. You do indeed have to scold them for those, just like you said. :) Apparently they're supposed to be temper-tantrums! I had mistaken them for the crying that requires praising in order to calm them down, as seen on the Tamagotchi Connection line.

Incidentally, in researching why this happened (though I still don't know why, even now), I discovered that the "Mine" meter is actually meant to be Selfishness! Man, that's a hell of a mistranslation. :o Once again, I strongly suspect that Tamagotchi GB was the subject of a Japanese-to-English Dictionary translation.

Apparently, in Tamagotchi GB, Zuccitchi and Masktchi have a chance to evolve into Bill, and apparently in the Western version this is easier to do than in the Japanese version, as explained here. However, even though I know that it's easier in the English version, I don't know how it's actually done!

Anyway, after all of that, I entered Bimmy into a beauty contest, but he placed third, and the poor little guy looked SO upset! :(

Still, the rest of his in-game day was happy, since now he's getting to try all sorts of new foods that he wasn't allowed to have before! :)

But, for now, I'm going to put my log on a brief hiatus again, as I've got a bunch of old games that I want to spend more time with (including my binder full of Game Boy games), and I don't want to end up with Tamagotchi burnout of any kind!

jXqM54V.jpg
Time for some retro gaming! :D

You'll also easily find by doing a google image search how to get the exact character you want if you look up "Tamagotchi Game Boy Growth Chart". Someone has compiled the entire thing into one simple jpg file. Evolutions have to do with the selfishness and stress values on one hand and on the IQ and Body values on the other. I'm not giving you a link for it though to avoid spoilers. In fact, even though I have downloaded the jpg file, I don't want to look at it too much. I feel like all that info takes away from the games.

Too bad you're going on hiatus, I hope you'll come back shortly!

I didn't know that such a thing was out there - thanks very much for the heads-up! :D I might look it up later, since it'll probably shed a bit more light on how the game ticks.

Unifuwatchi and Kiminanizatchi had a son called Goblintchi - so named because of the many odd colour-changes that his mother naturally went through as she grew up, and because, frankly, both of his parents look a bit weird. :P

DaRII9j.jpg

Last night, true to the reason for his name, Goblintchi grew up looking a bit weird himself - in a cute way, of course. ;)

I'm going to turn him green later, for a bit of a change, since his mother's green teenager stage looked cool, and then he will be marrying Fairytchi later today.

He looks like a cloud.

Hi! This is a first for me, doing any type of game log. My name is Dame, and I played Tamagotchis when they originally came out, but never that much. I now am busying myself with my Magic Blue Tamagotchi On.
      Currently:
      Hoshipontchi ♂ (First in run)
      Other things to note:
I am nocturnal, so I have set my Tamagotchi time to be 13 hours ahead of my time. I am using the Tamagotchi On app everyday. I am looking up some information, but not much. I am not planning on getting any certain Tama or anything off the bat. I am fine with being offered tips or advice! I am looking for people to friend on the app who are active.

Hi! I thought I'd try making a log, since I've always enjoyed looking at them. I might not be terribly active on here, but we'll see!

Right now I have a Tengutchi (named Kuma, which means 'bear')! He just got married to a lovely little ninja lady today...

And here is his little blob son!

When I was a kid, I had this pet and could never get it to grow into an adult. We weren't allowed to have virtual pets at school (this was when they were huge and almost everyone in my class had one!), so I begged my mom to take it to work and care for it... I couldn't even mute it and sneak it with me, because even when it's muted, you still hear the attention beeps and it wants attention every 15-20 minutes or so. However, each time she'd bring it home it'd be dead. I could never get this thing to grow and eventually the batteries died or I lost track of it, but something reminded me of it recently. While looking around, I happened to find a still sealed Bobo Panda Byte for a reasonable price on ebay, so I jumped on it.
Now that I have a new one, I've figured out why it died so often, so I thought it'd be fun to log my progress into the new stages of growth! I originally joined to ask for help from any other Panda Byte players, but it doesn't really seem like there are any active here at the moment, unless they just never saw my thread. 🙂 Here is my original thread, it shares a bit of info and activities involved for this pet, if anyone is interested.
Although I'm starting my log now, my panda just turned 5 today. This is a new thing for me, because it had died a few times already (and apparently many times when I was a kid). It seems that from ages 2-4, you just want to have her watch tv to "pause" her stats from changing, because she'll only eat apples and candy during this time, and they don't fill her hunger hearts. She won't eat bamboo and bread (as far as I can tell) until she turns 5, so unless there is some other secret thing you're supposed to do, I just have her watch tv when she's not sleeping. At ages 0-1, she's a baby and only drinks a bottle, plays games, and sleeps, so there isn't much to log for either of those two stages.
My panda turned 5 at 10:00 this morning, and appears to have all of her activities unlocked. She can now exercise and do the other learning options/activities (hula hoop and swinging), and finally eats bread and bamboo. I haven't had to dress her for the weather yet, but I'm excited to finally try that once I see a weather icon! She will also apparently run away at times when she gets older, and have friends visit, but I'm not sure what age this happens at. Once she's fully grown, she'll get one of 5 or so appearances, so I'm looking forward to seeing which one I get.
Here is a picture of her wandering around at age 5 (if anyone has suggestions for a better photo hosting service, let me know lol). I'll try to get pictures of her doing some of her other activities along the way.

Hello everyone and welcome to my log!
I would like to start this log by saying happy new year to all of you and wish you all the best in 2021. I'm sure last year was rough and we all struggled during the unexpected pandemic so please stay strong and safe because clearly the fight is not over, and I hope that this year is going to be the end of it and a beginning for all good things.
As you can see from the title that I'm going to log here about my Magical Witch and the Devilgotchi which I am so excited about and for some reason worried at the same time! I will be logging while I'm exploring these two fascinating toys and yes it took me SO long playing with them for what is going on in world, but the time has finally come and I hope you guys will enjoy this post.
So today is the day that I finally decided to put some batteries into my new evil babies and the excitement I felt when I turned them on!
      Starting with the Devilgotchi:
when I removed the tab I immediately saw to what appears to be  like a smoke that lasted for a few seconds until the bat showed up as you can see below:

the bat just kept flying and flashing for about 2-3 minutes and then it evolved to Deviltchi:

a new Devil is born, without really realizing the consequences of raising a devil has just begun! 😈
I took sometime figuring out the menu and of course fed him and tried to fill his both Hunger and Happy meter. Right after that I played the 'Catch' game, all you have to do is throw a star for your devil to catch it. You need to collect 4 stars in each round to win. As far as I know the game doesn't end unless you press C or lose but I'm not sure about that.

I actually spent good amount of time playing the game until... he.. slept during one of the rounds and made a very evil sound, not gonna lie I was caught off guard when I saw him sleeping and then suddenly he started smiling while the screen was inverting. Took me a while when I realized that this is him being mischievous and he wouldn't let me continue playing! By that time he stopped doing it so when I went and checked his Devil Power or DP is increased to 50, that means 10 more points were added because I didn't take any action quicker!
After that happened I thought I need to keep an eye on this little devil because I'm not allowing this to happen again, so I did that and made sure that every time he misbehaved and tried to be mischievous I will discipline him which is exactly what happened
This is him being naughty and not allowing me checking his health status after he beeped:

that was the only time I was able to take a pic of how often and quickly he will pull pranks on me which makes me laugh every time I see him sabotaging the games, not allowing me to check his status or even rejecting the food when he calls for it!
That helped me reduce his Devil Power a lot a long with 'Shaking Hands' with him. Randomly he will beep while looking at me and giving me a lovely little evil smirk which basically means that he is being friendly and wants peace:

Ultimately, all I want to trigger is a 'Good End' and a good looking character when he reaches his final stage, all that can be done if I manage to discipline him and make sure the friendship level between us is good. Only time could tell we should just wait and see...
      The Magical Witch:
After inserting the batteries oh my I couldn't believe I'm actually starting my very first Magical Witch that happens to be the air witch, also called Baluluna. After setting the time I waited for about 5 minutes to finally have my witch arrive! Also I would like to say that the animation is beautiful when there is a moon on the side of the screen that keeps rotating until your witch arrive, thought that was a perfect intro that suits the theme of the toy

She was hungry and wasn't feeling well (as she should be I mean who take 5 minutes to show up) I fed her some seeds and snacks to fill her meters up.
After settling her down, I went and searched about mixing the ingredients to create potions because that's what Magical Witches are about, using magic to either curse or cure another witch. I tried the first time mixing the very first potion that you can make and things did not turn out well...

the first attempt as you can see above didn't end well, while using the mixing bowl my witch looked funny when suddenly the potion exploded at her haha! She looked a bit sick and it took me a lot of time to actually figure out how to cure her from the explosion and turned out one of the seeds she has in store can actually cure her but needed to be used multiple times. I decided to give her a break for few minutes and go for another try one more time. This time she did well by mixing the ingredients well and we got what we wanted for our very first mix which is mushrooms:

Each time you successfully mix the ingredients you will get three pieces from the same mix. I gave my witch another break and made sure she is fed and healthy before going for the second potion she has to make.
The second mix went very well and it took only one attempt:

As can be seen, the second item she obtained is a broom, which will help us obtain the third item/food that we will try to mix tomorrow.
Paying attecntion to her MP or Magical Power could give us a really good results with the witch behavior and how well she could produce different mixtures, if there's another witch involved that will help it increase even faster but we should be alright with just one.
      The End:
That was all it for today, I personally am enjoying them both equally and I believe the more is yet to come. Although my Devil keeps beeping while it's asleep as I'm writing this it beeped more than 5 times (now it's 3am where I live) I've always loved the fact that you need to take care of a Devil and that didn't disappoint especially that I have terrible history with vintage tamagotchis but this one is different I can tell.  The Magical witches don't necessarily function as a Tamagotchi but they do look alike. For example the icons are similar, the buttons and how they respond is the same and I think the overall it's simpler gameplay wise. Definitely excited to see what we can do tomorrow so stay tuned.
this is the end of today's log, hope you guys enjoyed it please feel free to comment about anything.
