V4? If so, I think it's effectively paused while at the login screen, so no, it can't die while at the login screen.

 
Binary is correct- your Tamagotchi is on pause when you are exploring TamaTown. Once you are back to your normal Tamagotchi-mode then your Tamagotchi will have a chance of dying- if not token care of.
