I hope so much that someone can help me... because I have searched for over 5 years and found almost nothing. I'm trying to locate a virtual pet from 1998 that I was absolutely terrified of as a kid. It seems i have since grown a fondness for it and have tried to locate one. I cannot find anything. A few years ago i found a low res picture on a chinese website, and a also a very blurry growth chart on a website (I forget where). But nothing else. It seems almost non existent at this point. But i definitely owned this because I used to be afraid of it.

When I was about 10(in 1998) I had a few Tamagotchis and virtual pets that I loved. But thisone in particular seems to be impossible to find any traces of. This pet came out in mid 1998 (I remember it being the same week Digimon was first announced... I think). This pet looked very much like an official Tamagotchi Generation 2 but it definitelly wasn't one. It did have Tamagotchi looking characters, but they were original characters in that kind of style. Also, it wasnt called a Tamagotchi. If memory serves me well, it said on the packaging 'Tamakurai'. Or maybe it was Tamakai. I cannot be sure. But it looked authentic and I also remember it had 'Generation 3' written on the packaging, most likely to pass it off as a real Generation 3 Tamagotchi. (Which we know never came to be).

The one thing i remember was that these vpets all came in original Gen 1/2 looking shells but the unique feature was that these ones were always metallic in colour. The one I had was dark red, but in the store at the time they had lots of different colours. All metallic. The store I bought it in was a small independent toy shop in England. Sadly I cannot remember what it was called.

I remember it had a game of where you had a left and right guessing game but it didnt work right because the result didnt matter it still counted as a win.

You could feed it with 4 different food types. A cup/chalice of liquid, a babytchi(?), a cloud and what looked like a human eye (may have just been an olive or a grape).

The pet also had a very weird feature and this is why I was so scared of it as a kid. At random times usually late at night or if you push the clock forward, it would play a strange melody of beeps and its screen would show little grave stones and R.I.P would change between the graves. It would also occasionally show random words and other images that seemed very out of place for a childrens pet. I do remember in the manual it said at night the pet would dream so I always assume this was the dreams it had? I've never seen any other vpet have this feature though. Very cool as an adult maybe a bit too much for a child.

I only birthed it twice as a kid and I remember the adult stage I got one time looked like a kind Kutchipatchi character (but not) and another time I had a weird clown like character.

Looking back i wish i had kept all my virtual pets but i really would love to buy another one of these to relive this memory. But nowhere, not even the biggest archives of vpets even have this one MENTIONED.

Can anyone help? I've read a few threads on here and seems you have a lot of experts who have tracked down other ones successfully.

Here's hoping. Fingers crossed. :/

That is an amazing website. I have been going through all the pages and there are some real amazing vpets on there . Unfortunately no sign of the one I'm looking for. :(

I have attached the only photo I have ever found of it to this post. I found this picture years ago on a Chinese website but have never found any other pictures since. The one in this picture is green but the one I owned was red.

I can remember a few more details about it too. Another reason it used to scare me as a child was it used to show English words on the screen when you do certain things. Words like 'dying' when it was sick. When it was sick, it would show a heart monitor (I think?) And it had a secondary game with headstones but my mind is very fuzzy on that. I do remember it being kind of unpleasant though. It also would occasionally do things on screen that were not normal, when left alone. Sort of like the more modern Connection line. It was rare but I do remember it doing it. I remember running to my mum and showing her the Tamagotchi was holding little knives (thinking back it was more likely anything but, considering the pixels are so small and was most likely just playing with some kind of toy. Just yet another reason I want to buy one again so I can look at this from an adult perspective and appreciate what a unique bootleg this was.

Again my memory isnt the best source of reliability... the more I try to remember the more I question if I'm even remembering it right. I mean I was 10... and since I was kind of afraid of this one it makes sense as a child I'd have fears that were not real but I remember them as such.

For example I remember it once saying my name in text on the screen but I'm 99% sure that would have been impossible so I'm putting that down as very false memory. A name feature wasnt even considered back in this era. Childrens minds come up with some crazy crap. But I do remember taking it to school with me once and my best friend being fascinated by it too.

The shell and the background of it is definitely a P2 Tamagotchi!

However the character in the picture doesn’t exist on the P2 or even the remakes Gen 2. It looks like a corrupted Mametchi! Terrifying :oo

I’m thinking this could be a fake Tamagotchi which will be very hard to find!

I really hope someone could find the name I want to know more about it.

if this thing is real, this sounds awesome and i would love to help you find it and archive it. however, this kinda sounds like the beginnings of a creepypasta, ngl. but i also want to believe you so LOL. do you still have the blurry growth chart pic? id love to see what this thing grows into. also, do you still have the website you got the shell pic from? we could most likely translate the text there for more info.

I will try to read this and think about it and guess...

Yes!

Good thing.

Not sure about that.

It looked like a fake of Devilgotchi which is only on Japan.

Wow there's so much response here. Didn't expect this to blow up so much. Sorry I haven't been on sooner I've been busy with work. I'll try answer best I can.

Yes I do still gace the growth chart pic but I'm afraid it won't be much use... it's very low res.

Sadly the chinese site is lost, it was almost 5 years ago and I cannot remember where it was. I did save the entire page at the time but over the years I've misplaced the disc I saved it on. I only have the picture because i saved it on several computers as backups.

I chuckled at the creepypasta comment about a real pet dying when the Tamagotchi did. LOL i can honestly say i do not recall any real life tragedy happening when i used the vpet. Unless you include growing up because that sucked. Ha. Might be unfair to call it an evil pet. Just a scary kinda pet for a 10 year old is all. Mind you as a 10 year old I was also scared of a ton of other things. 🤷‍♂️ the one thing that stands out the most was it's strange nightmares and beeping melody when it randomly had them.

I'm about to go to sleep now its 4 in the morning. But I'll try post more tomorrow. Hopefully we can track this down.

Thank you all for helping me it is much appreciated.

It appears to say TAMANOROI GENERATION 3, but I can't seem to pull any Google results using the term in either English or Japanese. "Noroi" means curse, so it's no wonder the characters look scary and the toy does creepy things at night! I hope someone can find it - it sounds like a crazy play experience and the characters look great!

This was cross posted to the Collectors Facebook group where a mod made a good case for this being a photoshop of the all-gold P2 shells. They also noted how the pixels remain dark despite some of them clearly being under the light reflection.

so, it's fake?? that's a pity ;u;
but if it's not a real pet, could the original artist of the chart pops here so we could talk about making this pet reality? :3
I'm in a team that is developing some custom virtual pets and we're almost finished a version with all MGA pets and we're almost finishing one with nine dinkie pets, even with branching evolutions and foods not found in the original dinkies :3
maybe we can see a possibility of making a pet with all these ideas :D

Here you guys can see how our two projects are going so far :3
we would just need to have that red tamanoroi chart with better resolution to have a better idea of how it could be done :3

Also, the growth-chart strongly appears to be an unconvincing edit, too.

Fun little piece of fan-fiction, though!

Hmm. To be fair we dont actually know it's fake yet. Just that the pictures are (possibly). I find this one interesting. Maybe it's worth giving a little more research first?

Edit: on a side note, if this IS fake, it's a bloody good one. Good job. 🤘

You MAKE virtual pets? Hello new best friend! Can I join your team as a sprite and character designer and/or artist?

Sadly, I'm old enough to have seen some of the oldest hoaxes of this nature, and to know how they were broken open (anyone else remember the emergence of Polybius, and how it was ultimately irrefutably proven to be fake?), so I'm not going to take the "Maybe it's real?" approach myself. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, y'know?

If it was real, it wouldn't need fake pictures supporting it (the growth-chart was done by someone who seemingly didn't realise how to make a freshly-created image look like an old low-resolution find in GIMP - the editor used to create it - for example, and the photograph doesn't match the standard of 1998 cameras or how Chinese websites pictured their products in that era, examples of which are still preserved within the online Tamagotchi community), and everything else is nicely-implemented but pretty obvious (like the misremembering of the name as "Tamakurai"/"Tamadark" instead of "Tamanoroi"/"Tamacursed" - that's not something that a native English-speaker with fuzzy memories of a bootleg device claimed not to be of Japanese origin would typically do).

It's just a shame that this one was a bit late for Halloween - I might've been inclined to play along for a bit if it was on-time. ;)

EDIT: There's also the rather large giveaway that Bandai didn't use "Generation 1"/"Generation 2" to differentiate their releases at that time, as that's something that's only been done retrospectively (and only ever stylised as "Gen 1"/"Gen 2"), so a bootleg wouldn't have used "Generation 3" to try to appear legitimate anyway. You remember the packaging from back then very well, as I've seen you mention in other threads - we both know what Bandai and other companies did and didn't do. ;)

I'm just a "helper" in that project since I'm the less skilled of all of them ahahahah
We're using a custom board called MEGA to develop several virtual pets, this one for example uses MGA as base but have the 8 official avaliable pets plus one rare baby variant :3
When I saw this tamanoroi chart i instantly fell in love with that, and I'm really convinced to ask my friends to make it as something playable :3
