Hi, Do you agree to Capital Punishment? (for those of you who dont know what capital punishment is then i have a paragraph below so you can read it and stuff so...yea)

Capital Punishment

Capital punishment, or the death penalty, is the execution of a convicted criminal by the state as punishment for crimes known as capital crimes or capital offences. Historically, the execution of criminals and political opponents was used by nearly all societies - both to punish crime and to suppress political dissent. Among democratic countries around the world, most European (all of the European Union), Latin American, many Pacific Area states (including Australia, New Zealand and Timor Leste) and Canada have abolished capital punishment, while the United States, Guatemala, and most of the Caribbean as well as some democracies in Asia and Africa retain it. Among nondemocratic countries, the use of the death penalty is common but not universal.

Capital punishment is a contentious issue. Supporters of capital punishment argue that it deters crime, prevents recidivism, and is an appropriate punishment for the crime of murder. Opponents of capital punishment argue that it does not deter criminals more than life imprisonment, violates human rights, leads to executions of some who are wrongfully convicted, and discriminates against minorities and the poor.

An example of Capital Punishment would be the Execution (hanging) of Saddam Hussein

I made this topic cause i would like to get the opinions of other people. In my class we are studying capital punishment and so far in my class (there are 26 kids in my class) 14 people agree (myself included)

I'm strongly, strongly opposed.

Punishment isn't about revenge, it's about correction. Teach people right from wrong, or put them somewhere where wrong isn't an option... But killing them doesn't solve anything. >.>

From a moral standpoint, revenge is never a positive thing. Responding to murder with murder doesn't correct anything or heal the pain. It just causes more pain to the criminal's loved ones while the dead stay dead. And what does the criminal learn? Nothing. He's dead too.

And from an economic standpoint, many people support capital punishment because they think we shouldn't pay to keep dangerous people alive in prison. Not true.

On average, it costs drastically more money to execute someone than to put them in prison until they die of natural causes.

Look it up, it's true.

Thus life imprisonment without parole is a much better "last resort" for individuals who are too dangerous to live in our society.

I agree with it. I believe that if there is rock solid proof that you killed someone, you should be killed in return for the life or lives you've taken.

I agree... Like Sweet Kandi said If you have killed someone you should have done to you the same.

If you take one's life, and you are NOT insane, then I believe you should pay equal price, no?

Especially first degree murder, when you have it all planned out. I mean... if it's manslaughter(3rd degree murder), the people/person who was responsible obviously had no control over what happened, yet they should have been paying attention so they wouldn't hit the person in the first place.(I'm using a car crash situation)

It's almost like the law of equivalent exchange if you ask me.

Yea, Like "An eye for an Eye" if you kill someone you should pay the equal price

To Bellsprout- Thanks for moving the topic, i wasnt exactly sure where to put it.

I think Capital Punishment is very wrong.

Because people die without learning a lesson, and its just wrong, even for a terrible crime, they should be locked up and yes I do know that Prisons are 'overflowing', but still they should go to prison!
