Might I suggest trying to get the battery contacts to stick out higher as well? They may not be making good contact with the batteries, especially that one that looks lower than the other one.
It's actually not that uncommon for fakes to have the same backgrounds as real Tamagotchis, though usually printed in lower quality. I've also seen fakes copy the back mold too, so it says Bandai and whatnot, though those seem to be rarer. You'll just have to play it and find out. Interesting...

What do you do when you get a used Tamagotchi with a download option? Do you reset it or download? If you download, do you continue it or just check how far the previous owner got?
For me, if it's like a V1 or V2 or something, I try continuing where they left off. But any of them with usernames...
